Charles Nodier gelangte gegen 1830 zu einem völlig neuen Konzept des Fantastischen. Er wollte die zwei entgegengesetzten Reiche der Phantasie und der Alltäglichkeit so miteinander verzahnen, dass sie nicht mehr getrennt werden können. In der vorliegenden Untersuchung wird aufgezeigt, wie Nodier seine Vorstellungen in die poetische Praxis umgesetzt hat, wobei das besondere Augenmerk auf vier seiner Erzählungen gerichtet ist: 'Smarra' (1821), 'Le' 'Nouveau Faust et la Nouvelle Marguerite' (1832), 'Paul ou la Ressemblance' (1836) und 'Franciscus Columna' (1843).
