Now on a nationwide tour, starring Ruth Madoc and Brooke Vincent.

A Revised edition - with new scenes - of this best-selling play and GCSE set text.

Set in a Mother and Baby Home in 1964 in the north of England and peppered with songs from the period, Be My Baby follows the fortunes of Mary Adams, aged 19, unmarried and seven months pregnant. Forcibly sent to the home by a mother intent on keeping up appearances, Mary has to cope with the dawning realisation that she will have to give the baby up for adoption whether she likes it or not.

First staged to unanimous acclaim and full houses at the prestigious Soho Theatre in 1998 with Eleanor Bron and Diana Quick - and again in 2000, Be My Baby has since enjoyed several nationwide tours and huge success with young audiences eager to discuss and debate the underlying themes and ideas of the play and how things might have changed in the last forty years.

Review:
Be My Baby has the heartstring-tugging potency of a pop classic. --Independent

You don't have to be young, female or unmarried to find it intensely touching. --The Times

It's ten years since the premiere of Amanda Whittington's play about pregnant teenagers being sent away to give birth and avoid the stigma of being unmarried mothers...Whittington admits she never expected the play to be around a decade after she wrote it and she's too close to the work to be able to say why it's popular. But she gets emails from students which convince her that society today has similar issues about young, single mothers.

The appeal of Be My Baby is that it throws new light on a decade which in some ways is mistakenly heralded as the swinging '60s, a time of freedom and choice when barriers tumbled more quickly than Phil Spector propelled girl groups to pop fame.

Behind the liberty, though, were victims, especially the young girls who "got into trouble", usually at the hands of men who discarded the responsibilities of fatherhood faster than a cigarette end.

Whittington's play succeeds because it shows not only that the girls are normal teenagers who've made a mistake but also that they were kept in the dark about what would happen to them and their babies. (It makes for) a fine evening's entertainment. --British Theatre Guide

You don't have to be young, female or unmarried to find it intensely touching. --The Times
