Excerpt from Olympe De Clèves, Vol. 2 of 2: A Romance of the Court of Louis Fifteenth

He was, at the date in question, a scheming, blasé, old churchman, as Beaumarchais called him later; an aged man, with a young man's passion for intrigue, a mind fertile in paltry schemes, which he had studied up at his leisure during the reign of Louis XIV. Under cover of the Skirts of Pere La Chaise and Madame de Maintenon.

He knew the court thoroughly, and he was sure of the king; several attempts which had been made to oust him had turned to the confusion of his enemies, and yet he had not appeared to exult in his triumph in the least.
