[IT is not among mountain scenery that human intellect usually takea its finest temper, or receives its highest development; but it is at least there that we find a consistent energy of mind and body, compelled by severer character of agencies to be resisted and hardships to be endured; and it is there that we must seek for the last remnants of patriarchal simplicity and patriotic affection--the few rock fragments of manly character that are yet free from the lichenous stain of over-civilization.
