Not illustrated. 1921 edition. Excerpt: ... Chevroul, it will be remembered, had had his interest awakened by the "exploratory pendulum" used in his day by elairvoyants and in drawing-room sfanees. This pendulum, held in the medium's hand, eonsisted of a ring suspended by a hair. The ring hung down into a tumbler or wineglass, and answered questions put to the medium by tapping against the side of the glass, onee or oftener as the ease demanded. Chevreul satisfied himself that the person holding the pendulum was unaware of imparting any movement to it, and he asked himself whether the idea or simple image of a movement would not suffiee to bring about this movement. A theory was eurrent that the oseillations of the pendulum were ampler when the ring was suspended over mereury. Chevreul had little diffieulty in proving that the mereury had no influenee whatever. He demonstrated that the subjeet's thought (not his will) was the sole eause of the oseillations. This thought aeted through the intermediation of impereeptible movements, whieh were involuntary and uneonseious (subeonseious). Starting from Chevreul's elassieal experiments, I have devised the following exereises, and every one of my new pupils has to perform them. Materials. In the middle of a sheet of white paper draw a eirele, 0. Draw a line AB passing through the eentre of 0. Draw another line CD, perpendieular to AB, likewise passing through the eentre of O. These must stand out very distinetly on the white surfaee. Plaee the sheet on the ground or on the table in front of the subjeet, so that the line AB runs from left to right aeross his field of vision, while the line CD runs from near to far.
