A Fawn near the Road is intended for children between 3 and 9. It's the story of the Fawn's first outing--a trip to the river. Momma deer uses it as an opportunity to teach some life lessons, but the Fawn thinks it's just one big adventure. They're able to cross the road safely by carefully avoiding the angry ones. Then he learns how to jump but isn't very good at it. At the river, the Fawn meets his cousins and has even greater adventures. One adventure includes the ignoring of a parent's warning, consequences of actions, and ultimately doing the right thing. There are 27 pages of story text, including nine adorable illustrations by nine children from grades 4 through 8. An additional illustration by another child is on the front cover. The children also drew self-portraits which are included on the back cover. This book provides fun fiction with educational value. After chapters 1 and 3 are Questions for Children. These are designed to enhance understanding and comprehension, and to develop a child's ability to think about implications and consequences in the story. The questions also help a child with transformational thinking and decision making skills. All questions are neutral and there are no wrong answers. Young children will enjoy this book of fiction fused with subtle education and values. And they will absolutely love the illustrations drawn by children! Reviews: "A Fawn near the Road tells the story of adventure through the life experience of a curious child-The Fawn. This interactive book teaches (and reminds) us of leadership, courage, trust and playfulness when learning new life experiences. I appreciate Tracy Sulkin's use of children's art-this enhances the reader's ability to envision the story with vivid imagery and encourages our youth to support the beauty of art and story-telling." ―Elizabeth J. James, MA, LMFT, LPCC, Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist, Licensed Professional Clinical Counselor, Adjunct Professor, Upland, CA ". . . An endearing interactive children's book with exceptional illustrations. . . ." ―Tomi Maiers, Librarian, Pantera Elementary School, Diamond Bar, CA "We . . . received your beautiful book. . . . As a whole class, we read the story and my students loved this book. . . . When reading your book, we looked deeper into the story and tried to teach a lesson of patience. That fawn wanted to grow up so fast, but at the end, just focusing on one thing at a time is what we need. . . . Thank you for creating this book for our future readers." ―Mrs. Adams, Etiwanda Colony Elementary School, Rancho Cucamonga, CA "Hi. My name is Charlotte. I'm 8. I think this is a good book because the writing is detailed and paints a picture in my head. I also love the illustrations and how you put questions at the end of some chapters." ―Charlotte McDonald, Altadena, CA
