From the Publisher:
Flowers decorate our houses just as foliage carving decorates our churches. But the carving is more than just decoration, it has been chosen because of its spiritual associations. We could all probably come up with a reason for a rose or a vine but there are many more exciting ideas in there. White Bryony and Artemisia or Mugwort, Peas and Greater Celandine, Hawthorn, Maple, Mulberry and Bay and the many others all have fascinating stories to tell. This little book introduces us to the outline of those stories so that we no longer need to gaze, perplexed and maybe even irritated, when faced with a roof full of previously meaningless carving. The author, who made animal carving relevant and accessible in God’s Beasts, has given us a call to see our church interiors in a new light. The one hundred clear colour photographs and plans make this journey delightfully easy besides giving us a deeper appreciation of the carver’s skill.
Synopsis:
An introduction to the 'spiritual' significance of the thirty or so plant species in Exeter cathedral. Few places have such an accurate portrayal of plant species as Exeter. This book identifies for the first time a programme that has deep iconographic significance for these plant forms.
