James Howe says: "I'm often asked where I got the idea for Bunnicula. I wish I had a good answer, but the truth is I don't remember. When I was about ten, I started a club with my two best friends called The Vampire Legion. I also wrote the club's newsletter, "The Gory Gazette." In my twenties, I enjoyed watching vampire movies on television with my wife, Debbie. It was during that time the character of a vampire rabbit named "Count Bunnicula" popped into my head. Debbie and I wrote Bunnicula for the fun of it. We had no idea we were creating a book that would have such lasting popularity-or that after Debbie's death in 1978 and Bunnicula's publication in 1979 I would be on my way to a new career as an author of children's books." After meeting as acting students at Boston University, Deborah and James Howe moved to New York City where they worked in the theater. Besides Bunnicula, they wrote Teddy Bear's Scrapbook. James has since written more than fifty books for children, including four other books about Harold, Chester, and the vampire rabbit Bunnicula, Howliday Inn, The Celery Stalks at Midnight, Nighty-Nightmare, and Return to Howliday Inn.
