In the midst of wild and rocky Cornwall, two little girls listen entranced to Grandmother Dummer as she tells them the Story of Woman. They learn of Adam and Eve, of a pampered and cosseted existence in the Garden of Eden, of a luxurious world devoid of hardship, worry or care. Perfection is a vacuum – nature abhors a vacuum – so one day Adam and Eve find themselves evicted from Paradise and left to face a harsh and hostile world.
We follow Eve as she travels along a tortuous winding path, donning her different disguises as she goes: the Other Woman, the Whore, the Madonna, the Courtesan, the Bluestocking and the Witch. Thus the history of Woman begins: not the dry stuff of bible, myth and fable, but the sensual, sexual, earth-moving story of Eve.
'An exotic, witty and bizarre extravaganza, it is a feminist morality tale that will make big girls shiver'
COSMOPOLITAN
'A humorous and often cuttingly cynical version of women's history. Tennant's prose is fluid and easy but with a sardonic edge which gives the apparently cosy, chatty storytelling a sharp, ironic bite'
TIME OUT
'Entertaining, exhilarating...but underneath there is a bedrock of good sense about the role of woman not only in the past but also in the future'
