Book Description Paperback. Condition: Gut. 327 p. Scuffed and discolored, otherwise fine. - INTRODUCTION -- Late September in early Rome c. 200 B.C. It is the autumn Harvest Festival, and the natives are restless. Many thousands of rough and rowdy Romans mill about, bored by the ceremonies they have been obliged to sit (or stand) through, half of them drunk, the other half wishing they were.1 On a crude stage which has been thrown together for the occasion, an actor appears. He shouts desperately for silence, hoping to turn the unruly mob into something resembling an audience. Then he speaks the magic words: -- "1 bring you Plautus!"2 -- Suddenly, sweet silence. From the thousandth row, you can hear a pun drop. -- The very name of Plautus meant belly laughs, charm, wit, song in a word, entertainment. Plautus knew what they wanted and how they liked it. He gave his public not only enough, but too much, which is the quintessence of all that evokes laughter.3 To approximate Plautine musical comedy in modern terms, you would need the combined talents of Cole Porter, Rodgers and Hart, and John Lennon with a little help from his friends. The combination sounds unlikely, if not downright impossible, and serves to explain why Rome, so prolific in other ways (viz., two Catos, two Scipios, Caesars by the dozen), could produce but one Plautus. There were attempts to reproduce his style. Plautus was not only imitated, he was even forged: soon after his death comedies "by Plautus" began to appear in large number. Imitation may be a form of flattery, but forgery is the supreme tribute. Still, Plautus was, in every way, inimitable. ISBN 9780061319327 Sprache: Englisch Gewicht in Gramm: 248.
