Samovar Theological Books, Dublin
(Search Inventory)
Online used theology bookstore, selling commentaries, church history,
missionary, biography, hymnology, Greek, Hebrew etc.
Bookseller Profile: I started Samovar Theological Books
in 1993, when I was trying to exit a middle management general bookstore
job. I returned to my used-book "alma mater", Carraig
Books (Blackrock, Dublin, Eire) & looked for my old job back.
Sean Day, the owner who had previously trained me in used books
answered my request in an unusual way. He stated that he had no
positions available - but - he did have around 30 boxes of used
theology, which he offered to sell me for US$750. I took all of
those used theology books & was given his mailing list for that
area. I stayed in my middle-management bookstore job & started
my moonlight vocation, setting up my mail-order used theology book
business.
After spending US$1,500 in stamps & US$1,500 for photo-copying
catalogues, I decided that it was time to get my own desk-top photo-copier.
A few weeks later my brother came from the UK on a visit with a
Mac 475 & suggested that I get online instead. For a while I
did hard copy & e-mail catalogues. After about one year I went
exclusively online.
Around 1998 I downshifted to a part-time position in the bookstore
& in 2001 I finally quit my day job. I have catalogued about
16,000 books in that ten-year period. My stock in recent years has
become totally ecumenical. I think that I am Ireland's only on-line
used theology bookstore, selling commentaries, church history, missionary,
biography, hymnology, Greek, Hebrew etc.

Book Review: Dying to Live by D. Baldwin is my choice
to review, in particular as I see my growing children wanting to
keep up with their peers in Playstation & skateboard pursuits.
I also have my own temptations (books & CDs!). This book is
for lay-people rather than theologians, covering many aspects of
church life, marriage & family. Baldwin reflects many opinions
as the author started out in life as a Strict Baptist & is now
a Lay Reader in the Anglican Church. The notes reflect this deep
& wide ecumenical outlook. Few should struggle with the bright
breezy style of writing. Many will regret the challenge of pandering
to themselves!
