Last name of recipient cut away. Publisher's plum straight-grain morocco cloth, covers decoratively blocked and panelled in blind, gilt spine lettering, yellow-coated endpapers. Issued by Updike under his own imprint in 1896 (Smith, 1934, Bibliographical List of Books Printed at the [Merrymount] Press, no. 19). Intense black-and-white illustrations by Mary Newill of the Birmingham Guild of Handicraft. Boards with dust wrapper over. Small chip at top of spine, otherwise about fine.

First English edition of a book first published in Holland in 1893, and illustrated by the foremost artist working in the "Nouveau" style in Holland and a leading artist who's work commands high prices, both then and now. With litho colour illustrated paper boards, cloth spine, 31 plates each printed on one side only and with closed "French" fold format, final plate having a small piece placed over the final line as a publishers correction to the "wording", or style for the same reason? Each page with a complete full page crayon like plate done in soft stone litho, a very Japanese influence in present here, very popular with the art-nouveau movement both in Europe and America £420.00

Quarto. xii,289 pp. Beautifully bound by Bayntun Riviere in blue morocco: The upper board is decorated with colored leather inlays, which form the figure of Hans Christian Andersen sitting on a stone, surrounded by a gilt border; gilt-stamped decoration and lettering in spine compartments; gilt-stamped turn-ins and marbled endpaper; a.e.g. Spine is lightly faded, else fine. ans Christian Andersen, born in 1802 in Odense, Denmark, is famously known around the world for his beloved fairy tales. Andersen wasn't always a writer - he started his career as a singer and actor - but his true love was writing. Later in his career Andersen became known as the father of the modern fairy tales. Among Andersen's best known tales are The Duckling, The Tinderbox, Little Claus and Big Claus, Princess and the Pea, The Snow Queen, The Nightingale, and The Steadfast Tin Soldier. All of Andersen's works were original and only 12 of his 156 know fairy stories drew on folk tales.
