London: , 1821 with Notes and Reflections, by the Rev. W. Gurney, A.M. Engraved title, frontispiece and 32 plates. 12mo. [127 x 69 x 44 mm]. Bound c.1833 in red roan, embossed in blind on both covers with a die of an alter table and Gothic window within a decorative border. Smooth spine embossed with a die of a Gothic church tower, with the title in gilt, the edges of the boards tooled with a gilt roll, mauve endleaves, gilt edges. The Old Testament was "Printed by and for J. Jones", and The New Testament " by and for J. White". The Directions to the Binder include: "The Binder is particularly desired not to beat the Work, as it is hot-pressed, and therefore will not require it; every sheet should be carefully refolded, and as the margin is large, it will admit of being considerably cut away; it should be bound with a hollow back". Jamieson, "English Embossed Bindings 1825-1850", dates the first embossed leather bindings in England to c.1825, and the present volume was bound sometime before November 1833, the date of an inscription of the front endleaf. Neither die is signed, though the spine is probably that described by Jamieson as no.43. The binding is in fine condition. £300.00

John Baskerville, 1763 Printer to the University, large thick folio. Richly gilt ornamental red russia with a very attractive gilt bordered medallion inlay with stamped initials JHS (Jesus Hominum Salvator) and cross in two shades of green morocco in the center of upper and lower boards, a.e.g.; scuffed, corners and spine ends rubbed and chipped even with headband, joints occasionally rubbed, very upper joint cracked slightly but not at all affecting structure, morocco spine label chipped with "Bible" still there, considerable wear but nothing approaching a fatal defect and certainly overall solid and tight. Gilt urn motifs in each compartment on spine. Interior very appealing with a couple of insignificant small tears only one affecting some text.
