Accessing the Forums

Q: Do I have to be signed on to post?
A: Yes, you need to be signed on to post on the forums. Creating an account is fast and free. When creating an account, or when logging on to the forums for the first time, you will be asked to create a "Nickname" for yourself when loggint on to the forums for the first time.

Q: How do I sign on?
A: If you are signed on your AbeBooks account, you are signed on to the forums.

Q: What is a "Nickname" and why do I need one?
A: Your Nickname is what other community members will know you by - it's your name on our community forums. Using a Nickname protects your privacy. Other forum users will only be able to see your Nickname, rather than your full name or bookstore name (unless you choose otherwise). All Nicknames are unique. Note: Your nickname should be less than 33 characters, and contain only letters, numbers or the underscore ("_"). It cannot start with the letter sequence "ABE".

Q: How do I change my Nickname?
A: In the AbeBooks Community Forums, there is a ‘My Nickname’ link in the right sidebar. Clicking this link will allow you to view and change your Nickname.

Q: Why can't I access the Bookseller Forum?
A: The Bookseller Forum is only available to registered AbeBooks booksellers. To become a bookseller on Abebooks, please read the information under our Sell Books section.

Navigating the Forums

Q: How do I post a new discussion (thread)?
A: You can post a new discussion by clicking the "Post New". You will then need to:

1)  Choose a folder from the ‘Folder’ drop-down list
2)  Enter a title or ‘Subject’ for your post.
3)  Enter your ‘Message’.
4)  Click [Preview] if you wish.
5)  Click [Post] to post your message.

Q: How do I reply to a post in a discussion?
A: If you wish to reply to the original post, click [Post Reply] at the top of the discussion. If you wish to reply to another post within the discussion, click the [Reply] button at the bottom-right of the particular post you want to reply to. Regardless of which you choose, you can choose a specific recipient to address your message to with the ‘To’ drop-down list.

Q: How can I find a specific discussion or thread?
A: On every forum page, there is a ‘Search this Forum’ box at the top of the right sidebar. To find a phrase or keyword you are looking for, enter it in the search box and click the search icon. For more search options, click ‘Advanced Search’.

Q: How do I sort the discussions?
A: By using the "Show discussions" drop-down list, you can display the discussions on the forum by:

·  All (default)
·  2 Days Back
· Today
· Unread Msgs
· Unread To Me
· High Interest
· Recently Seen
· Ignored

Q: What are the stars at the bottom of each post?
A: You can tell the forum system if you are interested in a discussion by giving it a rating between 1 and 5 stars. This is sometimes useful because you can sort the discussions (using the ‘Show’ drop-down list) to view discussions of ‘High Interest’.

Q: How do I report what I believe to be an inappropriate post?
A: Click the [Options] button at the bottom of the post you wish to report. Choose ‘Report Violation’. You will be asked to select a reason for reporting the message and to enter any additional comments. The Forum Moderators are notified of the complaint. [More Info]

Q: How do I change my forum Profile and Preferences?
A: In the AbeBooks Forums, there are two links on the right-hand side: ‘My Profile’ and ‘My Preferences’.

Q: What Can I Change in "My Preferences"?
A: You can change the following forum settings found in ‘My Profile’ or ‘My Preferences’. Note that all fields are optional.

About Me:

  • Select an avatar or upload a custom avatar
  • Gender
  • Birthday
  • Location

Photos:

  • Create and manage personal photo galleries

Preferences:

    • Name
    • Time Zone
    • Personal Signature
    • Hide Others’ Signatures
    • Email notification of posts addressed to you
    • Allow member-to-member email
