John SteinbeckBorn in Salinas, California in 1902, John Steinbeck spent his youth working on ranches and observing life in the countryside of California. He started an English major at Stanford University but did not finish, dropping out to focus on his writing. His first novel, published in 1929, was called Cup of Gold. However, it, as well as his next two books, was not well-received in the literary world. Upon returning to California and marrying his first wife, he wrote Tortilla Flat and The Grapes of Wrath, both of which broke through to become very successful, and the latter winning the Pulitzer Prize. Steinbeck was also awarded the Nobel Prize for Literature in 1962. He died in 1968.
