Lloyd Jeck of Majeck Books, in Oliver in British Columbia, Canada

Lloyd Jeck

"My ‘life-before-AbeBooks’ had very little to do with books - with one exception - I wrote and published a book of memoirs and family history. Trying to cover the period of 1892 to 1979 was a daunting task for a neophyte writer, but reader comments were encouraging enough that I continue to write short articles.

I joined AbeBooks.com as a seller in January 2003, and it has provided me with the opportunity to serve, and communicate with, many interesting people. One of the most rewarding experiences began in August 2005.

After some communication with H.G. in Ontario, Canada, we determined that a Majeck Books listing titled ‘New Ukrainian-English Interpreter’ was the book she was searching for. This book, published in 1926, was intended to replace a copy of the same title that had once belonged to her father. She had lent her treasured copy to readers who never returned the book.

After receiving the replacement copy, H.G. replied: “I never thought I would ever find the Ukrainian-English Interpreter with a cover page and in as good a condition as the book was. Thank you.”

The story doesn’t end here. In February 2006, I began negotiations with a magazine publisher in Ontario. When the publisher learned that I marketed used books through AbeBooks, he revealed that he had a collection of Ukrainian books and needed help in interpreting the language. I discouraged him from sending me the whole collection.

I contacted H.G. and asked if she might be able to help the publisher as they were only a couple of hour’s drive apart. She very graciously accepted and I was able to complete contact arrangements between them. The lady can speak the language and is very knowledgeable in what Ukrainian resources are available in Canada. It sounds as though at least some of the books will be donated to a resource library. "
