The Clans and Tartans of Scotland by Robert Bain

No textile pattern has ever had more meaning than tartan. A powerful symbol of Scotland and Scottish culture, tartan was banned in 1749 by the English in order to suppress the warlike clans. On the forthcoming Burns' Night, millions of Scots and those of Scottish heritage around the world will celebrate their roots, eat Haggis and wear tartan for the evening.

Kilts and tartan go together like neeps and tatties, but tartan is found in many aspects of Scottish life from packaging to wall coverings. It has also been extensively used by publishers as a book binding material, particularly for titles illustrating Scotland, notable Scottish figures and tales of fiction set in Scotland.

This selection of books bound in tartan or featuring tartan cover artwork includes titles about royalty who adored the Highlands to famous citizens of Edinburgh to classic Scottish fiction, Robert Burns himself and guides to the various tartans and the clans that originated them.
