NY. 2001. Broadway Books. deckled foredge. endpaper maps. b&w frontis. illustration. 279p+about the authors. 8 b&w illustrations. glossary. notes. bibliography. history of france. world war ii. nazi germany. ~ In 1940, France fell to the Nazis and almost immediately the German army began a campaign of pillaging one of the assets the French hold most dear: their wine. Like others in the French Resistance, winemakers mobilized to oppose their occupiers, but the tale of their extraordinary efforts has remained largely unknown~until now. Wine and War tells the alternately thrilling and harrowing story of the French wine producers who undertook ingenious, daring measures to save their cherished crops and bottles as the Germans closed in on them. By rooting the narrative in the stories of five prominent winemaking families from France's key wine~producing regions of Burgundy, Alsace, the Loire Valley, Bordeaux, and Champagne, journalists Don and Petie Kladstrup vividly illustrate how men and women risked their lives for a cause that meant saving the heart and soul of France as much as protecting its economy. It was an extraordinary partnership involving everyone from the owners of Paris's famed restaurant La Tour d'Argent who rushed to build a wall to conceal their most precious twenty thousand bottles, to French soldiers who triumphantly reclaimed Hitler's enormous cache of stolen wines at the conclusion of the war. Wine and War portrays the central role wine has long played in France's military campaigns~how Napoleon ordered wagonloads of champagne to sustain the morale of his armies, and how, during World War I, huge quantites of wine were shipped to soldiers in the trenches of Northern France. By the beginning ofWorld War II, wine represented a living for nearly 20 percent of France's population, and the authors chronicle the Nazis' determination to seize control of the French wine industry and its profits. At the same time, Wine and War brings to light the resourcefulness of wine producers who employed spiderwebs to "age" false walls hiding their best wines, who foisted off their worst bottles on the Germans or gleefully misdirected shipments, sending champagne to Homburg instead of Hamburg, and who sabotaged trains transporting wine to Germany. It also recounts the heroics of winemakers who hid Jewish refugees and smuggled members of the Resistance across the Demarcation Line in wine barrels, as well as the villainy of collaborators who worked with Nazi occupiers for their own benefit. Finally, Wine and War reveals that the French were not alone in trying to save their wine. They received help from unexpected quarters: the German weinfuhrers, the very men the Nazis sent to requisition wine, whose close ties to the French wine industry mitigated their actions, and even the collaborationist Vichy regime, which recognized the importance of keeping France's vineyards French, and prevented the Nazis from seizing the Jewish owned Chateaux Mouton~Rothschild and Lafite~Rothschild. Based on three years of research and interviews with the survivors who engaged in this epic enterprise, Wine and War illuminates a compelling, little~known chapter of history, and stands as a tribute to extraordinary individuals who waged a battle that, in a very real way, saved the spirit of France.

What was it that took this man~brilliant poet, as even his fiercest detractors admitted, rakehell, and gadabout~to so commit his life and his soul to a struggle so far from his native shores? For many of Byron's biographers, Greece represents a mere passage, episodes worthy of mention but empty of meaning. For Stephen Minta, himself a lover of the complexities of this country, Greece emotionally, physically, creatively~features hugely in any attempt to understand Byron. "If I am a poet," Byron wrote, "the air of Greece has made me one." Perhaps unique among his generation, Byron loved Greece the way he found it~a land of sensations, of sun and sea and light, but also a place of irritations, of frustration, duplicity, and cruelty. If his fellow countrymen saw in Greece only antiquities, monuments reinforcing a classical education, Byron saw life in all its aspects: grief and despair as well as delight and sensuality. The people of Greece, in all their variety, drew him in, and eventually he made their cause his own. What began as a tourist's expedition grew into a love affair compelling enough to enlist his fortune~and his life. Written with elegance, steeped in the poetry as well as the events, On a Voiceless Shore is filled with shafts of insight that reveal more about Byron than far more massive treatments have permitted. It is everything that readers of Stephen Minta's Aguirre: The Re~creation of a Sixteenth Century Journey Across South America might have expected of this polymath author.

His viewpoint is explained in the preface. The Story of Plymouth, Michigan is a history of the community from 1824 when the first settlers arrived. Original sources are used to describe the naming of the township, the settlers' relations with the Potawatomie Indians, and the wildlife abundant in Plymouth when the settlers arrived. Men of prominence in the community in the early days, Plymouth's role in the Underground Railway during the Civil War, the community in the year the village was incorporated, and Plymouth's prominent position in the Prohibition movement are depicted. One chapter covers early economic developments, including the era when Plymouth was the air~rifle capital of the world. It also tells about the Plymouthite who went to Hollywood and made a fortune in real estate, Henry Ford's connection with Plymouth, and the automobile factory which once operated here. The tragic railroad wreck of 1907, and the days when Plymouth was a bustling railroad center with a busy roundhouse, are described. There is a chapter on Plymouth in the gay '90's, recounting horse~racing at the track, and fun at the midway, at Plymouth Fairgrounds, as well as other activities and amusements in the days of wooden sidewalks and plank roads. Plymouth from 1900 to 1930 is covered in a chapter which includes the visit of Carry Nation to the village, the law suit involving Phoebe Patterson, Michigan's first woman Justice of the Peace; the Sunday movie controversy; Plymouth during Prohibition days; and the period when sit~down strikes were often in the news. A chapter on Plymouth in the 1930's relates how the community managed during the great depression, and describes the days of the W.P.A. in the city. A chapter on Plymouth in the 1940's portrays the city's first woman Mayor. It covers, in detail, the fight which embroiled the entire community when the City Commission was recalled. Sections on religion, education and culture in Plymouth, including the history of the Plymouth Symphony Orchestra, are included. The major fires in Plymouth history, the development of the city's own water system~and why it was abandoned in 1971~are recounted. The book contains pages of pictures, maps, a bibliography and an index.

For centuries people have been intrigued by King Arthur and his court. Poets and writers have been telling and retelling his tale, creating a glorious and prolific body of stories that continues to inspire and entertain. But what is the truth behind these stories? King Arthur addresses this question by challenging the contrasting notions of Arthur "the grim Dark Age warrior," and Arthur "the noble kingly hero" of medieval romance. John Matthews explores the legends that encircle a figure called Arthur, uncovering his many guises. King Arthur not only introduces the characters that surrounded him ~ Guinevere, Lancelot, Gawain, Perceval, Merlin, Morgan le Fay and the Lady of the Lake ~ but also explores the magnificent stories associated with Arthur, such as the Round Table, the quest for the Holy Grail and Sir Gawain and the Green Knight. King Arthur also investigates the reality of Arthur's Britain and reveals the few historical accounts that provide evidence for the existence of a Romano~British soldier called Arthur. Man or myth? It is impossible to tell, but whatever is true, it is certain that the tales of King Arthur and his knights will continue to capture the imagination of everyone ~ from children to film directors ~ for centuries to come.

But that disdain is curiously in evidence well before his brother's death, as God inexplicably refuses Cain's sacrifice while accepting Abel's. Cain kills in a rage of exclusion, yet it is God himself who has set the brothers apart. For Regina Schwartz, we ignore the dark side of the Bible to our peril. The perplexing story of Cain and Abel is emblematic of the tenacious influence of the Bible on secular notions of identity~notions that are all too often violently exclusionary, negatively defining "us" against "them" in ethnic, religious, racial, gender, and nationalistic terms. In this compelling work of cultural and biblical criticism, Schwartz contends that it is the very concept of monotheism and its jealous demand for exclusive allegiance to one God, one Land, one Nation or one People~ that informs the model of collective identity forged in violence, against the other. The Hebrew Bible is filled with narratives of division and exclusion, scarcity and competition, that erupt in violence. Once these narratives were appropriated and disseminated by western religious traditions, they came to pervade deep cultural assumptions about how collectives are imagined with collective hatred, with collective degradation, and with collective abuse. Recovering the Bible's often misguided role as a handbook for politics and social thought, Schwartz demonstrates just how dangerous it can be. An extraordinary study, lively, polemical, and sure to be controversial, The Curse of Cain confronts the inherent ambiguities of biblical stories on many levels, and, in the end, offers an alternative, inspiring reading of the Bible that is attentive to visions of plenitude rather than scarcity, and to an ethics based on generosity rather than violence.

One reason may be that, for more than half a century, there has been no up~to~date single~volume work that chronicles the story of Arab civilization ~ until now. Albert Hourani, distinguished historian and interpreter, has written a masterwork~a panoramic view encompassing twelve centuries of Arab history and culture. He looks at all sides of this rich and venerable civilization: the beauty of the Alhambra and the great mosques, the importance attached to education, the achievements of Arab science~but also internal conflicts, wide~spread poverty, the role of women, and the contemporary Palestinian question. Hourani describes how the new religion of Islam created a far~flung Arab Muslim world that embraces lands reaching from the shores of the Atlantic to Iraq and the Indian Ocean. Each has its own geographical features and historical traditions, yet certain themes and experiences are common to all: the rise and spread of Islam, the growth of the Ottoman Empire, the expansion of European trade and empire, and in the last decades, the challenge of Islamic resurgence and integration into a new kind of world. He provides a clear and comprehensive interpretation of the paths of the Muslim religion, its divisions, its authority and traditions, its current contradictory powers to unite and to divide. Throughout, social institutions and culture are intertwined with politics and economics. The text is studded with famous names from the past~ Ibn Khaldun, al~Ghazali and Ibn Sina (Avicenna), Saladin and 'Abd al~Nasir (Nasser)~ as well as with those of the present~ Hafiz al~ Asad, Saddam Husayn and Mu'ammar Qadhafi, and the Nobel Prize winner Najib Mahfuz.

The Art of the Steal is the only narrative to tell the whole truth about one of the most fascinating big~business trials of the new century: the proceedings that grew out of the price~fixing scandal that rocked the auction world and put one of the richest men in America behind bars. Brilliantly written and reported, it tells the story of several larger~than~life figures ~ the billionaire tycoon Alfred Taubman; the most powerful woman in the art world, Dede Brooks; and the wily British executive Christopher Davidge ~ who conspired to cheat their clients out of millions of dollars. It offers an unprecedented look inside this secretive, glamorous, gold~plated industry, describing how Sotheby's and Christie's grew from clubby, aristocratic businesses into slick international corporations. And it shows how the groundwork for the most recent illegal activities was laid decades before the perpetrators were caught by federal prosecutors. Christopher Mason is the only reporter who has been able to persuade all the key players (and hundreds of others) to spill the beans and who has followed the trail of this story wherever it led from galleries and boardrooms in London, Paris, and New York, to parties in Palm Beach, to courtrooms in Lower Manhattan. Evoking some of the best~known investigative narratives, such as Barbarians at the Gate and Den of Thieves, and the hidden lives of the very rich described in Philistines at the Hedgerow, The Art of the Steal will be one of the most revealing and entertaining books of the season.

As a result of his Senate investigations and access to law enforcement agencies, Senator John Kerry has seen the dark world of dirty money, violence, and corruption up close. In this groundbreaking book, he describes global crime organizations from Asia to South America, Europe to Africa, and shows why they have become one of the greatest threats to our national security. Kerry takes us inside major crime organizations that now operate on the global stage: the Russian "Mafiya," which includes much of the old Soviet KGB; the Chinese triads, whose tentacles reach into many American cities; the Colombian drug cartels; the Japanese yakuza; and the Sicilian Mafia. These ethnically based criminal enterprises have taken full advantage of the fall of communism and advances in communications and transportation technology to circumvent existing laws, which are based on traditional, outdated notions of national sovereignty. Kerry identifies the crime lords, their suppliers and customers, and the alliances they are forming with one another to further their criminal reach. He reveals the secret, shadowy world of the offshore banking industry, which criminal gangs use to launder their ill~gotten gains, and shows how the money is then used to infiltrate legitimate businesses and destabilize elected governments through bribes to politicians, judges, and policemen. Most important, in The New War Kerry maintains that the aim of the global crime lords is to gain control of the very institutions that are the core of civil society~the courts, legislatures, banks, and media in their own countries as well as in the nations where they operate. And he demonstrates how an antiquated legal system is struggling to fight twenty~first~century criminal enterprises. This is a hard~hitting and critical assessment of current government policies for dealing with international crime. Kerry reveals the failures of both diplomacy and nerve that have crippled leaders in Washington and other Western capitals, as well as in Moscow and Beijing. He explains how law enforcement and judicial institutions must be reformed structurally to defeat vicious criminals. His recommendations are specific: Shut down offshore banks that launder and shelter criminal profits; regulate electronic money transfers; expand the scope of extraterritorial jurisdiction for major crimes committed against a country's citizens overseas; use the CIA and other intelligence services to penetrate global crime organizations; share the seized assets of international criminals with governments that cooperate in fighting global crime. From one of the nation's leading authorities on global crime, Senator Kerry's The New War is a call to arms.

The ngoni is the musical instrument favored by the djeli, the bard~historians attached to the kingdom's noble families, who recited the nobles' ancestry and the accomplishments of each generation. These narratives, which have been preserved orally for more than three hundred years, are about real people and events, and they contain within them many fragments of Segu's history. The heroes of these stories are kings, princes, warriors, djeli and magicians. They confronted kings, conquered city~states, battled other heroes, performed both generous and violent acts and lived by a code of valor, chivalry and honor rivaling that of the knights of medieval Europe and the samurai of Japan. The epics are arranged in chronological order. They are rich in poetic expression, full of adventures and valorous deeds and attest to the sophisticated culture that developed in Africa before the arrival of the Europeans. As djeli competed with djeli to produce narrative and musical masterpieces, the history of the kingdom was recorded in a series of fascinating stories mixing fact and myth. These delightful tales will have great appeal to students of African culture and history and to anyone interested in folk literature.

Those discovering Said for the first time will be profoundly impressed." ~TONI MORRISON. The extraordinary reach of Western imperialism in the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries is one of the most astonishing facts in all of geopolitical history. Neither Rome, nor Byzantium, nor Spain at the height of its glory came close to the imperial scope of France, the United States, and particularly Great Britain in these years. But while the rule of these vast dominions left scarcely a corner of life untouched in either the colonies or the imperialist capitals, its profound influence upon the cultural products of the West has been largely ignored. In this dazzling work of historical inquiry, Edward Said shows how the justification for empire~building was inescapably embedded in the Western cultural imagination during the Age of Empire, and how even today the imperial legacy colors relations between the West and the formerly colonized world at every level of political, ideological, and social practice. Probing some of the great masterpieces of the Western tradition~including Conrad's Heart of Darkness, Austen's Mansfield Park, Verdi's Aida, and Camus's L'Etranger~ Said brilliantly illuminates how culture and politics cooperated, knowingly and unknowingly, to produce a system of domination that involved more than cannon and soldiers ~a sovereignty that extended over forms, images, and the very imaginations of both the dominators and the dominated. The result was a "consolidated vision" that affirmed not merely the Europeans' right to rule but their obligation, and made alternative arrangements unthinkable. Pervasive as this vision was, however, it did not go unchallenged. Said also traces the development of an "oppositional strain" in the works of native writers who participated in the perilous process of cultural decolonization. Working mainly in the languages of their colonial masters, these writers~induding William Butler Yeats, Salman Rushdie, Aime Cesaire, and Chinua Achebe~identified and exposed the mechanisms of control and repression. In so doing, they reclaimed for their peoples the right of selfdetermination in history and literature. In today's post~colonial world, Said argues, imperialist assumptions continue to influence Western politics and culture, from the media's coverage of the Gulf War to debates over what histories and literatures are worth teaching in our schools. But his vision reveals a hopeful truth: if the West and its former subject peoples are to achieve a meaningful, harmonious coexistence, it will depend upon the development of a humanistic historical understanding that all cultures are interdependent, that they inevitably borrow from one another. Finally, this passionate and immensely learned book points the way beyond divisive nationalisms toward an awareness that the true human community is global.

BEFORE WORLD WAR II Amsterdam was a city remarkable for its spirit of cooperation between Jews and Gentiles. Remembering Jewish Amsterdam is a celebration of that spirit and of the lives of the Jews within that city. Philo Bregstein and Salvador Bloemgarten have composed an evocative mosaic of the memories of seventy~seven "narrators" who talk about their lives in Amsterdam between 1900 and 1940. This oral story is divided into sections that deal with the many facets of their lives ~ the trades and professions, the unions and clubs, the synagogues, the neighborhoods and living conditions, music and sports ~ to give a fascinating view of life in Amsterdam during those years. While the Holocaust, which claimed the lives of three quarters of Amsterdam's Jews, casts a shadow over the memories of the interviewees, these testimonies re~create the spirit of time and place to paint a vivid picture of a little~known past erased by war. Salvador Bloemgarten has added a historical overview of the Jewish community in Amsterdam from the seventeenth century until the German occupation in 1940, describing how for centuries it was one of the most prominent in Western Europe. "One of the book's most remarkable qualities is due to the great variety among the backgrounds of the narrators. Not only does one find pickle makers, market venders, and cigar makers, but also many an academic plus the occasional banker. The best represented are the diamond workers ~ an occupation that was so common among prewar Jews that it was referred to simply as 'the trade.' I read this book with fascination . Remembering does in fact offer a striking portrait of what Amsterdam meant to Jews and what Jews meant to Amsterdam." ~PETER VAN DER LINDEN, De Nieuwe Linie.

His reign is one of the shortest in English history, yet few English monarchs have exercised so compulsive a fascination for the English~speaking peoples. It has been estimated that something has been written about him in every single generation since his death almost 500 years ago. Richard III has been the most persistently vilified of all English kings. In the century after his death, no one of note had any great interest in defending his name, or could risk doing so. Henry VII and Henry VIII meted out a brutal fate to each potential claimant to the Yorkist throne and this was sufficient deterrent to any prudent person to keep silent about the king the Tudors most loved to hate. Here, Professor Ross has not written a conventional biography, if such were possible. His approach is thematic, in an effort to see Richard in the context of those aspects of his life and reign which mattered most to Richard himself and his contemporaries and to explain the paradox between the man apparently guilty of ruthless political violence, indeed infanticide, on the one hand, and a seemingly beneficent, concerned and well~intentioned monarch on the other. There is an emphatic concentration on how to gain and how to keep power in late medieval England, for Richard should not be viewed in isolation from the conditions in which he lived. At the age of eight, his father, Richard duke of York, was killed in battle and his brother Edmund brutally murdered afterwards. Richard himself twice suffered exile because of civil war and most of the men he had known in his youth were either killed in battle or judicially murdered for alleged treason. To put him in the context of his own violent age does not make him morally better, but at least it helps us to understand him, and in the climate of the politics of his own day, his mistakes may be seen as errors of judgment rather than moral failures. When, and why, did Richard decide to seek the throne for himself? His usurpation was made possible not only by his own forceful character but by the deep divisions which existed among those who had held power at the court of Edward IV, and the situation was exacerbated by the estrangement from high politics of the rank~and~file nobility, partly as a consequence of the Wars of the Roses and partly because of Edward IV's own policies. Quantities of ink and passion have already been expended on the fate of the princes in the Tower, but Ross here argues that it was the apparent belief of Richard's contemporaries that he was guilty of their murder which is of consequence, whether he did the dreadful deed or not. Richard's connections with the north of England are unique, and he used his extensive powers of patronage to promote northern loyalists to positions of power, but he never managed to gain the loyalty of the southern gentry, who formed the core of the rebellion in 1483. Although the revolt was unsuccessful, and it is hard to fault Richard's conduct of government once king, a foreign~supported invasion led to the Battle of Bosworth in August 1485 and the death of the Yorkist dynasty with Richard himself. Professor Ross has produced a thorough, exhaustive, unbiased study of Richard III, e.

Three hundred all new recipes, each photographed in full color, show why Martha Stewart is still America's style authority and most trusted party host. It was fifteen years ago that Martha Stewart first turned her creativity and talent for teaching to this subject, when she defined the look and flavor of party appetizers for professionals and home cooks in MARTHA STEWART'S HORS D'OEUVRES. Since then, America's tastes have evolved and Martha's own approach to food has expanded to encompass flavors from around the world, seasonal ingredients fresh from the garden, and innovative preparations all presented with an unsurpassed eye for beauty. In this book, after laying out the basic foundations and techniques, Martha presents chapters on different hors d'oeuvre categories that are brimming with new ideas~Layered and Stacked; Wrapped, Rolled, Filled, Folded, and Stuffed; and Skewered and Threaded. Whether a classic cocktail party food reinvigorated with her wit and style~chicken salad tea sandwiches turned on their sides and encrusted with sesame seeds, for example~or deliciously decadent dips for crudites and seafood updated with Indian dhal or white beans and mustard greens; tiny toasted breadboxes filled with Welsh rarebit; or savory sips of soups in edible cups, these impeccable jewels are as exciting as anything Martha has ever invited her readers to serve on the buffet or tea table or pass among guests. Reflecting Martha's favorite way to entertain now~informal and relaxed~there is also Bites and Pieces, a chapter packed with simple recipes for parties that please the guests without undoing the host. Marinated olives, spiced and seasoned nuts, handmade cheese crackers, and spicy cocktail ribs can be prepared quickly and easily in advance and arranged before the doorbell rings. Even the drinks have been provided: classic and contemporary cocktails, imaginatively garnished, are accompanied by a guide to stocking the bar and serving champagne. Everything about MARTHA STEWART'S HORS D'OEUVRES HANDBOOK has been considered to create a book that is easy to use. The size was chosen to comfortably fit in the hand, in the cookbook holder, or on the kitchen counter. Color photographs in the front of the book help cooks select which hors d'oeuvres to combine for their own parties; the cross~referenced recipes in the back have been tested in Martha's own kitchen and in the test kitchens of MARTHA STEWART LIVING; and two place~marking ribbons keep track of both picture and recipe. And every detail has been covered~tips on techniques and ingredients, serving ideas, menu suggestions, recipe variations, advice on party planning, and even a glossary of equipment, special ingredients, and supplies, with a guide to finding them. With its range of recipes, its wealth of ideas, its lavish photography, and its innovative format, MARTHA STEWART'S HORS D'OEUVRES HANDBOOK is simply the most instructive, inspirational, and indispensable guide to hors d'oeuvres ever compiled.

Following a boyhood in nineteenth~century Pittsburgh, during which he learned from his Scotch~Irish immigrant father the lessons of self~sufficiency and accumulation of wealth, Andrew Mellon overcame painful shyness to become one of America's greatest financiers. Across an unusually diverse range of enterprises, from banking to oil to aluminum manufacture, he would build a legendary personal fortune, tracking America's course to global economic supremacy. Personal happiness, however, eluded him: his loveless marriage at forty~five to a British girl less than half his age ended in a scandalous divorce, and for all his best efforts, he would remain a stranger to his children. He had been bred to do one thing, and that he did with brilliant and innovative entrepreneurship. The Mellon way was to hold companies closely, including such iconic enterprises as Alcoa and Gulf Oil. Collecting art, a pursuit inspired by his close friend Henry Clay Frick, would become his only nonprofessional gratification. And by the end of his life, Mellon's "pictures" would constitute one of the world's foremost private collections. Mellon's wealth and name allowed him to dominate Pennsylvania politics, and late in life he was invited to Washington. As treasury secretary under presidents Harding, Coolidge, and finally Hoover, he made the federal government run like a business ~ prefiguring the public official as CEO. But this man of straightforward conservative politics was no politician. He would be hailed as the architect of the Roaring Twenties, but, staying too long, would be blamed for the Great Depression, eventually to find himself a broken idol. The New Deal overthrew Andrew Mellon's every fiscal assumption, starting with the imperative of balanced budgets. Indeed, he would become the emblem~and the scapegoat~for the Republican conviction and policy that the role of government is to help business create national wealth and jobs. At the age of seventy~nine, the former treasury secretary suffered the ultimate humiliation: prosecution by FDR's government on charges of tax evasion. In the end Mellon would be exonerated, as he always trusted he would be, and throughout the trial, which lasted more than a year, he never abandoned what had become his last dream: to make a great gift to the American people. The National Gallery of Art remains his most tangible legacy, although he did not live to see its completion. The issues Andrew W. Mellon confronted~concerning government, business, influence, the individual and the public good~ remain at the center of our national discourse to this day. Indeed, the positions he steadfastly held reemerged relatively intact with the Reagan revolution, having lain dormant since the New Deal. David Cannadine's magisterial biography brings to life a towering, controversial figure, casting new light on our history and the evolution of our public values.

He analyzes the pressures that have arisen in today's transitional period between the old world and the new, the forces that lead us to a general malaise, impersonality, a sort of dehumanization. Dr. May points to the heart of this modern dilemma as the failure to understand the real meanings of love and will, their sources, and their interrelation. He proposes three new ideas that are basic to love and will: eros, the daimonic, and intentionality. They are new, at least, to our society, for although each is present in our modern world, none has been recognized or used with the conventional approaches to love and will. Dr. May does not preach. He probes, explores, questions, suggests, and thus leads the reader, professional and layman alike, to a new level of comprehension. In bringing fresh insight and interpretation to the concepts of love and will, he shows how we can attain a deeper consciousness that will help us rediscover human meaning and values and set them against the vast emptiness of our depersonalized technology.

Jews endured a subordinate status politically and militarily, a minor nation amid the powers of the Hellenistic world. Erich Gruen's work, however, highlights Jewish creativity, ingenuity, and inventiveness, as the Jews engaged actively with the traditions of Hellas, adapting genres and transforming legends to articulate their own legacy in modes congenial to a Hellenistic setting. Drawing on a wide and diverse array of texts composed in Greek by Jews over an extended period of time, Gruen explores works by Jewish historians, epic poets, tragic dramatists, writers of romances and novels, exegetes, philosophers, apocalyptic visionaries, and composers of fanciful fables~not to mention pseudonymous forgers and fabricators. Rather than analyze writer after writer, text after text, discussing genres and proposing dates, Heritage and Hellenism takes up topics common to most of the Hellenistic period, examining the various texts where appropriate to illuminate the ongoing process whereby Jewish thinkers endeavored to express their people's identity in terms borrowed, manipulated, and refashioned from the Hellenic corpus. In these fictive creations, Jewish writers reinvented their own past, offering us vital insights into Jewish self~perception.

The story is surprising, controversial, and exciting as only a long~lost history can be when it is at last recovered. In The Jesus Dynasty, biblical scholar James Tabor brings us closer than ever to the historical Jesus. Jesus, as we know, was the son of Mary, a young woman who became pregnant before her marriage to a man named Joseph. The gospels tell us that Jesus had four brothers and two sisters, all of whom probably had a different father than his. He joined a messianic movement begun by his relative John the Baptizer, whom he regarded as his teacher and a great prophet. John and Jesus together filled the roles of the Two Messiahs who were expected at the time: John, as a priestly descendant of Aaron, and Jesus, as a royal descendant of David. Together they preached the coming of the Kingdom of God. Theirs was an apocalyptic movement that expected God to establish his kingdom on earth, as described by the Prophets. The Two Messiahs lived in a time of turmoil as the historical land of Israel was dominated by the powerful Roman Empire. Fierce Jewish rebellions against Rome occurred during Jesus' lifetime. John and Jesus preached adherence to the Torah, or the Jewish Law. But their mission was changed dramatically when John was arrested and then killed. After a period of uncertainty, Jesus began preaching anew in Galilee and challenged the Roman authorities and their Jewish collaborators in Jerusalem. He appointed a Council of Twelve to rule over the twelve tribes of Israel, and among the Twelve he included his four brothers. After Jesus was crucified by the Romans, his brother James~the "Beloved Disciple"~took over leadership of the Jesus dynasty. James, like John and Jesus before him, saw himself as a faithful Jew. None of them believed that their movement was a new religion. It was Paul who transformed Jesus and his message through his ministry to the Gentiles. Breaking with James and the followers of Jesus in Jerusalem, Paul preached a message based on his own revelations, which would become Christianity. Jesus became a figure whose humanity was obscured; John became merely a forerunner of Jesus; and James and the others were all but forgotten. James Tabor has studied the earliest survrvmg documents of Christianity for more than thirty years and has participated in important archaeological excavations in Israel. Drawing on this background, Tabor reconstructs for us the movement that sought the spiritual, social, and political redemption of the Jews, a movement led by one family. The Jesus Dynasty offers an alternative version of Christian origins, one that takes us closer than ever to Jesus and his family and followers. This is a book that will change our understanding of one of the most crucial moments in history.

(vi)+254p.+ about the author. notes. bibliography. index. american history. religion. politics. theology. history of christianity. ~ Twenty~five years ago, when Pat Robertson and other radio and televangelists first spoke of the United States becoming a Christian nation that would build a global Christian empire, it was hard to take such hyperbolic rhetoric seriously. Today, such language no longer sounds like hyperbole but poses, instead, a very real threat to our freedom and our way of life. In American Fascists, Chris Hedges, veteran journalist and author of the National Book Award finalist War Is a Force That Gives Us Meaning, challenges the Christian Right's religious legitimacy and argues that at its core it is a mass movement fueled by unbridled nationalism and a hatred for the open society. Hedges, who grew up in rural parishes in upstate New York where his father was a Presbyterian pastor, attacks the movement as someone steeped in the Bible and Christian tradition. He points to the hundreds of senators and members of Congress who have earned between 80 and 100 percent approval ratings from the three most influential Christian Right advocacy groups as one of many signs that the movement is burrowing deep inside the American government to subvert it. The movement's call to dismantle the wall between church and state and the intolerance it preaches against all who do not conform to its warped vision of a Christian America are pumped into tens of millions of American homes through Christian television and radio stations, as well as reinforced through the curriculum in Christian schools. The movement's yearning for apocalyptic violence and its assault on dispassionate, intellectual inquiry are laying the foundation for a new, frightening America. American Fascists, which includes interviews and coverage of events such as pro~life rallies and weeklong classes on conversion techniques, examines the movement's origins, its driving motivations and its dark ideological underpinnings. Hedges argues that the movement currently resembles the young fascist movements in Italy and Germany in the 1920s and '30s, movements that often masked the full extent of their drive for totalitarianism and were willing to make concessions until they achieved unrivaled power. The Christian Right, like these early fascist movements, does not openly call for dictatorship, nor does it use physical violence to suppress opposition. In short, the movement is not yet revolutionary. But the ideological architecture of a Christian fascism is being cemented in place. The movement has roused its followers to a fever pitch of despair and fury. All it will take, Hedges writes, is one more national crisis on the order of September 11 for the Christian Right to make a concerted drive to destroy American democracy. The movement awaits a crisis. At that moment they will reveal themselves for what they truly are~the American heirs to fascism. Hedges issues a potent, impassioned warning. We face an imminent threat. His book reminds us of the dangers liberal, democratic societies face when they tolerate the intolerant.

After 18 months in office, and despite massive military invasions of the West Bank and Gaza, Sharon has delivered neither. Now, another Israel is raising its voice in opposition to the failed policies that have attempted to fight terror with brutality. In this urgent and passionate intervention, a diverse group of Israelis ~ high~ranking former government officials, Journalists, soldiers, novelists, professors ~ demonstrate that the occupation of Palestinian territory, with its settlement construction and colonial policing, has undermined Israel's democratic ideals and liberal values. The occupation has distorted the achievements of Zionism in the name of territorial expansion and military conquest, and has deeply compromised the security and moral authority of the state of Israel. Today, the war of words over Palestine is as ruthless as the one fought with bombs and tanks, with each side firing off bitter fusillades of prose and propaganda. But, as the bloodshed mounts, independent voices of dissent become vital. Honorably following in a long tradition of critical thinking and open debate which dates back to Zionism's earliest days, these voices are today ignored in America and drowned out at home by demands for war and expulsion. Needed now more than ever, The Other Israel is a clear~eyed look at the failures of the past and the path to peace for all citizens of the Middle East.

The buildings shown here are made of concrete (Tadao Ando), or of paper (Shigeru Ban); they are minimalist (Wiel Arets), sculptural (Frank Gehry), or even figurative (Branson Coates). Because they are selected precisely for the variety of their work, because each of these architects is important in his or her own way, the eighty~seven selected here can be considered to be today's most creative building designers. They are Australian, Japanese, American or European, but they are each engaged in solving the practical problems of a given client, site and function, while still adding something of their own personality, their own take on what makes architecture truly contemporary. And out of their diversity can be drawn an almost self~evident conclusion: today there is no International Style, no one way to view the present.

At first it was only the career of Air Force Lieutenant Milo Radulovich that was at stake. The country was then in the grip of McCarthyism, and in the shameless fashion of the time, Radulovich was being stripped of his commission for associating with his allegedly subversive father and sister. But Radulovich chose to fight these unjustified accusations. Legendary journalist Edward R. Murrow and his producer Fred W. Friendly seized upon this "little story" to strike at the heart of one of the most evil "isms" ever inflicted upon this nation. The ultimate result was the exposure and destruction of the Tyrant of Fear himself~Senator Joseph R. McCarthy.

A COLLECTOR'S GUIDE TO MASKS has been devised by a leading authority from Christie's auction house to professionally guide the new collector, the specialist, and the experienced dealer through a still~evolving subject area which has yet to be fully codified. Whether the principal interest is in ethnic (by far the most sought~after category), European, or theatrical masks, every potential collector will benefit from expert advice on buying and selling; maintenance and display; valuing; and, most importantly, on building a collection of the best possible pieces within the budget available. Combined with an authoratative historical overview, and up~to~date international price guidance, A COLLECTOR'S GUIDE TO MASKS will be the indispensable reference source for any serious collector.

Today there are as many Buddhist believers as Christians and Muslims combined. The fortunes of Buddhism are traced through time and space, from the founding of the world's largest monastic order in northeastern India 2,500 years ago to contemporary Europe and America, where many are attracted by this supremely civilized ethos of benevolence, honesty and self~control. The spread, decline and resurgence of Buddhism is central to whole epochs and cultures in the eastern half of the globe. The result of years of painstaking and imaginative research and preparation, this volume presents in a vivid and authoritative manner the whole of Buddhism's influence on Asiatic civilization. World~renowned scholars provide the eleven chapters, which are richly illustrated with examples drawn from the fabulous canon of Buddhist art. "The range is impressive; its historical depth. and geographical breadth. make it a useful reference for specialists and general readers alike." ~The Times Literary Supplement.
