He was essentially self-taught with a background in hotel management and insurance. His orthodox scientific career began with an appointment to the Geological Survey of Scotland in 1867, a position he held until 1881. He corresponded with Lyell, Geikie and Darwin; Geikie in particular encouraging him in his researches. He was elected a Fellow of the Royal Society in 1876 and received an honorary LL.D. from St. Andrews in the same year.
