Since the publisher died some years ago this book has become very hard to find and the English language version (as here) even more so. This is a very very good set, each volume is in its original hardback binding with no inscriptions or bookplates, binding still tight, minor wear to bottom edges, 2 bumped corners to Part 2. Title page, [ 7p ] preface, [ 5p ] contents list, 119 pages plus supplement (title page + 28 pages), [ 2p ] advertisements, 3 folding plates and 2 folding tables (containing the four equation of time tables). A complete copy of this famous work, most pages now a little browned with age (especially the leaves of gathering E), page 48 torn (not affecting text), plates and tables good. The contemporary full calf binding skilfully re-backed retaining original boards (the front board with blind tooling), the spine with raised bands and original red leather label laid down, one corner very worn. Inside the front cover the book has two presentation inscriptions date 1834 and 1862 respectively and two book plates, one for 'Calwich Library'. The library at Calwich Hall, Staffordshire, belonged to the Granville family and was sold by auction in September 1844.

Most of the book is lessons in arithmetic and geometry but there are chapters on pendulums and the drawing of watch calibres, plus an appendix of practical tips for those working at the bench.

Written to coincide with an exhibition held in London in September 2018, this book explores the innovation surrounding the development of the early pendulum clock in London and the lines of collaboration that made it happen. The book has chapters on 17th Century clockmaking in London, architectural clock cases, the Fromanteel Family and Cornelius Drebbel, a previously unrecognised influence on the Fromanteels; followed by excellent full colour photographs and descriptions of each of the 119 exhibits dating from circa 1500 to circa 1725. The standard edition of the book is sold out. This beautifully produced, deluxe half-leather bound, signed and numbered, edition has a red leather spine and corners with red cloth covered boards, the spine with gilt lettering and gilt lines, all page edges gilt.

Alexander Cumming was a well-respected 18th century watchmaker. The first essay ? An Essay Towards the Improvement of Clock-work ? deals with pendulum design including temperature compensation, the use of oil and the design of recoil and deadbeat escapements. The second essay ? An Essay Towards the Improvement of Watch-work ? deals with the design of watch main springs, balances and balance springs. A very good copy, first two pages slightly foxed, other pages in very clean condition, the plates in even better condition. Full leather binding, re-bound many years ago with new spine (which has blind tooling and a red lettering piece), the boards with the original leather covering laid down.
