First edition, first impression, inscribed by the author on the title page, "To Jonna, with love, Roald Dahl, 30 Nov. 1984". Written for a slightly older readership than his other works, the collection includes two semi-autobiographical stories, in turn based on Dahl's experience as a fighter pilot in the Second World War and exploring his motivation to become a writer. A film adaptation of "The Wonderful Story of Henry Sugar" was released in September 2023. Directed by Wes Anderson, members of the cast include Ralph Fiennes, Dev Patel, Ben Kingsley, and Benedict Cumberbatch. Octavo. Original blue boards, spine lettered in gilt, beige endpapers. With dust jacket. Two pages of photographic illustrations. Bookseller's ticket on front pastedown from Dahl's local bookshop (The Abbey Bookshop, Great Missenden). Head and foot of spine slightly bumped, top edge irregularly stained yellow, light foxing to fore edge; jacket a little worn at top, spine faded, price-clipped but with publisher's price sticker (£7.95): a very good copy in a very good jacket.

Hardcover. Condition: Good. Dust Jacket Condition: Good. Bacon, Paul (Jacket Design) (illustrator). First Edition. Beautifully signed by Roald Dahl at title page: "Love, Roald Dahl." Very attractive and dynamic. Stated at copyright: "First Published 1977. Copyright 1977." Navy textured boards, gilt spine titles, moderate shelf, corner wear. Pages generally very good; moderate fox to front few leaves, some to exterior text block. Name or other with impression in blue pencil or similar partially erased and crossed out at half-title page. Wonderful wrap-around jacket with red and black titles of London city scene or similar with caricatured people - jacket design by Susan Shields. Stated at back flap: "Jonathan Cape 1977." Rare near very good signed first edition in same wrapper. With Roald Dahl, you can never be sure where reality ends and fantasy begins. Dahl makes his dedication: ".with affection and sympathy to all young people (including my own son and three daughters) who are going through that long and difficult metamorphosis when they are no longer children and have not yet become adults." Contents: "1 The Boy Who Talked with Animals; 2 The Hitch-hiker; 3 The Mildenhall Treasure; 4 The Swan; 5 The Wonderful Story of Henry Sugar; 6 Lucky Break; 7 A Piece of Cake - My First Story - 1942." A superb collection of tales, from one of the world's favorite storytellers. Meet a boy who can talk to animals; a man who can see with his eyes closed; and, discover a treasure buried deep underground. These stories of fantasy and intrigue include: "The Boy Who Talked with Animals" - in which a stranded sea turtle and a small boy have more in common than meets the eye; "The Hitchhiker" - proves that in a pinch a professional pickpocket can be the perfect pal; "The Mildenhall Treasure" - a true tale of fortune found and an opportunity lost; and, "The Wonderful Story of Henry Sugar" - in which a modern-day Robin Hood brings joy to the hearts of orphans - and fear to the souls of casino owners around the world. A clever mix of fact and fiction, this set of short stories also explains how master storyteller Roald Dahl became a writer in "Lucky Break." Also, includes a special bonus: "A Piece of Cake - My First Story, 1942." Printed in Great Britain by The Anchor Press Limited, Tiptree, Essex. 249 pages. Insured post. Size: 8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾" tall. Signed by Author. Book.
