Book Description: Duckworth, London, 1953. Publishers' Cloth. Book Condition: Very Good. Dust Jacket Condition: N/a. First. 27.5 x 20.5 Cms. Written by one of the most knowledgeable persons connected with the Persian rug trade. A long time member of the highly professional staff of the ORIENTAL CARPET MANUFACTURERS Ltd which, at its peak, was the biggest single enterprise in the world devoted to the Oriental rug. Its history is fascinating as anyone who has read Antony Wynn's excellent "Three Camels to Smyrna" published in 20++ will know. In its final years it was the jewel in the crown of a financial group (Scottish Hereditable Trust) which had already acquired four of Britain's biggest rug dealers : Eastern Carpets Ltd, Kayam Carpets Ltd, E.G. Benlian Ltd, and A. Oundjian Ltd (which had only recently absorbed the firm of Joseph Eshkeri). Edwards had already written about carpets before he started - in his final years at the OCM where he was the Managing Director (CEO in modern jargon) - on this monumental enterprise. On his final tour of Iran he took his successor's son (Bryan Huffner) with him and it was he, on Edward's untimely death, who saw the book through to publication. Despite the fact that, of the 423 illustrations, a mere 4 are in colouir, this was quite the most important and authoritative work on the subject AND IT REMAINS SO TODAY ! As for colour pictures of Persian rugs, there has been a mountain of books featuring these from the 10960s to the 1990s. This is a fine copy of the regular first edition ; there was a second "edition" whose only difference is that it has a couple more colour plates, one of which also appears both on the front and on the back of coloured jacket. Book Description: Theodor Brun, London, 1953. Paperback. This is a fine copy of the de luxe first edition of which only 100 numbered copies were made. It was bound in a fine maroon leather, with raised bands and gold lettering ; this example is number 11 of the fifty reserved for"The Collectors Library Book Club". The other fifty were retained by the OCM, for use as gifts for their better clients. What we find somewhat curious is that this version of Edward's great work appears under the imprint of a different publisher even though there is no difference that we can detect when comparing any page in the one against the same page of the other ! NOTE ON BINDING. there is slight wear on each of the four corners. The gold embossed pattern on the front cover is a very modest one. There are vaguely floral decorated end-papers. The back cover shows a slighgt scratch, and the colour has faded about one inch down from the toip, and one inch in from the spine. Presumably it was opnly partly protected from the lightby an adjacen t book that was a trouch smaller in size. For this reason the price has been reduced - i. Bookseller Inventory # 001391
