A remarkably good for its age copy of this work whose full title is: The Self-Interpreting Family Bible, illustrated, containing the Old and New Testaments; to which are annexed marginal references, and an exact summary of the several books; a paraphrase on the most obscure or important parts; explanatory notes, evangelical reflections, etc. etc. by the late Rev. John Brown, Minister of the Gospel at Haddington. With many additional references and numerous illustrations. No date or edition given but certainly 19th Century. Copies issued by James Semple publishers are rare. No dust Jacket (as issued). Cover: full brown leather cover, with blind embossed and gilt patterning, and gilt lettering to both faces; all faces have some wear, fading and chipping, but gilt still quite good on rear; 6 banded spine with wear to all edges, slight loss at top and bottom, both hinges split but still attached. Internally: very clean tightly bound text block, both internal hinges reinforced with cloth tape ; some slight foxing to both paste-downs, title page and last few pages otherwise remarkably clean including ornate coloured pre-title page; family portrait gallery and register present at beginning and blank; all edges gilt (very bright). Many coloured and sepia illustrations in excellent condition. lxxxii,1150 pp. Concordance 72 pp. Weight over 5.5k packaged which will incur increased postage charges.

Prize plate stuck to front pastedown. Both hinges mildly cracked, reinforced with brown tape. Binding throughout is firm. Pages have light tanning and foxing throughout. More pronounced to text block edges. Minor creasing to title page and Index page. Text is unaffected. Boards have moderate shelf-wear with bumping to corners and rubbing to surfaces. Slight crushing with small splits to spine ends and corners. Cloth is slightly frayed. Gilt lettering is darkened. Faint water staining to both boards causing cloth to be slightly discoloured. Book has a slight forward lean.

Significant wear to the boards and spine of both books, with the boards loose and coming away from the main textblock. Volume one contains neat inscriptions to the front endpaper of a couple getting married, with further notations about their four children. Textblock edges are a faded marble, with thumbing and general foxing to pages commensurate with age. Needs rebinding but would make a nice set. More photos available on request.
