Some of the family history of the Harris family is listed inside front cover, commencing with statement of verification regarding the ancestry of the Harris family, made by Liberal MP for Leicester, John Dove Harris. Commencing 1802, concluding 1835. John Dove Harris (1809 ¿ 20 November 1878) was an English Liberal politician who sat in the House of Commons between 1857 and 1874. Harris was the son of Richard Harris former MP for Leicester and his wife Fanny Dove, daughter of William Dove of Moulton, Northamptonshire. He was Mayor of Leicester in 1850 and in 1856. He was a Deputy Lieutenant and J.P. for Leicestershire, and a J.P. for Leicester. In 1857 Harris was elected Member of Parliament for Leicester but lost the seat in 1859. He stood unsuccessfully in 1861 but was re-elected as MP for Leicester at the 1865 general election. He held the seat until 1874.Harris died at the age of 69. Spine tight, lettering and decoration in gold gilt, leather from spine stuck down by the same Bindery Team, edges and seams frayed. Endpapers tanned. Cut edges in gilt. Text block mostly only lightly tanned, but some pages show heavier tanning, with intermittent foxing. With numerous coloured illustrations in oil and on steel. Nineteen full page delightful colour plates with paper guards. The colour is bright but some of the borders are foxed and many of the paper guards are foxed. FULL TITLE: BROWN'S SELF-INTERPRETING FAMILY BIBLE: Containing the Old and New Testaments; to Which is Added an Extensive Introduction; Marginal References and Illustratiions; An exact summary of the several books; A paraphrase on the most obscure or important parts; Explanatory Notes, evangelical reflections, etc. etc. By the late Rev. John Brown, with many additional references and A Life of the Author. With numerous coloured illustrations in oil and on steel. ILLUSTRATIONS: Tissue guarded pictorial title page; gilt & blue decorated 'Family Portrait Gallery', a section of 4 pages which have not had any pictures placed; 4 pages of gilt decorated Family Register pages which have not been filled in; 19 full page delightful colour plates with paper guards. These are all in place and for the most part are in excellent, unmarked condition, with pale browning on a few of the guards and in the margins of some plates. All are without edgewear but for one plate opposite page 806 which has a small loss at the tip of the right corner. PAGES & CONTENT: lxxxii (Life of John Brown; An Introduction to the right understanding of the oracles of God, including 'Chronological Index of Scriptural History etc.';+ 1187 (Old & New Testaments with sections of additional background information at the end of the NT + 104 page Concordance. All pages are well boxed with bright gilt edges. The pages of text are in excellent condition, being bright, clean and free from brown spotting but for some pages where there is some in the margins and also on five pages at the end of the Concordance. No inscriptions. There is light tanning at page edges with darker tones on a very few pages. The binding is tight. Cross references are in two side columns on each page. The comprehensive explanatory notes are at the foot of pages of biblical text. The full leather cover, with blind embossed patterning, cover has minor wear and some fading to the gilt lettering on the front and on the banded spine as will be noted in the photo. BRASS DECORATION: The brass clasps are in excellent working order and are undamaged. The ornate brass corners are securely in place. WEIGHT: over 5 kg packaged. Item Description: T. Kinnersley, 1814. Hardcover. Book Condition: Very Good. Rebound in black cloth. John Brown's (1722-87)Self-interpreting Bible was originally published in 1778. Originally of Scottish farming stock, Brown was orphaned at twelve and became a shepherd. Having little formal schooling he taught himself Latin, Greek and Hebrew and later became a preacher in the Burgher branch of the Secession church. He wrote a number of books, many of them aimed at young people. This volume contains forty engraved plates. Condition: This volume has been rebound in black cloth with the original spine. The binding is therefore tight and firm with allthe internal pages firmlyattached. There is some wear to the extremities including marks to the boards. The internal pages are generally clean with some brown spotting, including to the platesand the occasional handling mark. There is one page towards the back (St paul's Epistles) which is missing asection of text, although the page has been mended. The title page has handling marks and perhaps has spent some time without boards. Overall this volume is in good condition. Bookseller Inventory # 005942
