Item Description: Printed by Gavin Alston, the Publisher. And sold by the other Booksellers in Great Britain and Ireland., Edinburgh, 1778. FIRST EDITION. TWO VOLUMES. 4to. 9.25 x 11 inches. [5] + 118 + [1] + approx. 1766 unnumbered pp. Separate title page for New Testament but register is continuous. The 10N gathering has 6 leaves instead of 4. Occasional foxing and a few stains but otherwise a very good copy in a fine original binding. Ownership inscription of Othniel Oxley on first free endpapers. The text is the Authorised Version. John Brown (1722-1787) of Haddington was one of those self made Scotsmen who rose from very humble origins and a bare few months of elementary education, to become a scholar of repute and in his case a minister of the Secessionist Church of Scotland and a famous theologian. As a herdsman and shepherd he taught himself Latin, Greek and Hebrew and went on to master a variety of near eastern and modern European languages. This Bible was perhaps the work for which he is best remembered today: 'The Self-Interpreting Bible remained in print until the twentieth century. The Bible was a.substantial work, which did not prevent its becoming, as Robert Burns bore out, as familiar in Presbyterian households as John Bunyan's Pilgrim's Progress. Brown's text was furnished with a battery of cross-references, minor marginal notes, short introductions to each book, a summary of contents at the head of each chapter, 'reflections' on each chapter-in effect applying its message to readers-and explanatory footnotes. A lengthy introduction deals with the Bible's authority and inspiration, its interpretation, and biblical history from creation. All were intended, as the title made clear, to make the Bible accessible to the humblest reader.(DNB). Although there were several later editions, (including a New York one of 1792) and many reprints, this first, Edinburgh, edition of 1778 is scarce: ESTC records five UK copies only, in the BL, Canterbury and Norwich, Glasgow University Library and National Library of Scotland; overseas, two in Australia but none in North America.
