Item Description: London & Newcastle-on-Tyne: The Tyne Publishing Company Limited no date - c ?, 1880. On of the best Victorian Bibles I have seen in a long time. Full leather binding with brass corner pieces and brass clasps. Folio. 13.5" x 10.5" x 3.5" (34cm x 27cm x 9cm) . [6pp.]/pp.82/pp.25/pp.1123/[2pp.]/pp.52 . 28 coloured plates (including frontispiece and extra title-page) plus 2 coloured maps and 8 pages for family details (partly completed). Polished black calf over thick bevelled boards with bright gilt decoration and central gilt oval with the title: "Holy Bible". Each outer corner with ornate brass cornerpiece and two large brass clasps (in working order). Spine with 5 raised bands, gilt decorated compartments and bright gilt title: "Holy Bible". Just light rubbing to edges and a few small dinks. A really well-cared-for bible. All page edges bright gilt. Original brown endpapers. Free-endpapers lightly foxed. The book begins the a brightly coloured frontispiece face a brightly coloured title-page. This is followed by a printed title-page (lightly foxed). The two maps are lightly foxed, but the coloured plates are in very good condition, with only the odd small blemish. A lovely example of a Victorian Family Bible. The family details relate to the Cooper Family of Bingham, Nottighamshire, England. Family history records match a John Cooper born in 1853 and marrying Mary Elizabeth in 1895 . The latest record is the death of Daisy Cooper nee Smith in 1973. ** "In 1882, Walter Scott, a successful businessman with little formal education, found himself the surprised owner of a nearly bankrupt publishing company. Scott had agreed to act as mortgagor for the growing Tyne Publishing Company, but it soon became apparent that Tyne's programme of expansion was too ambitious - the company was hopelessly overcommitted. Scott appointed David Gordon, a dynamic Scotsman, as manager, and the Walter Scott Publishing House was born. Gordon began to improve the list by adding series: the Canterbury Poets Series, the Camelot Classics Series, the Great Writers Series, and the Contemporary Science Series. The company later published Tolstoy and Ibsen translations, as well as works by Bernard Shaw, Robert Blatchford and George Moore." - See The Walter Scott Publishing Company: A Bibliography (Pittsburgh Series in Bibliography) by John R. Turner. Bookseller Inventory # 42031
