Item Description: John C. Winston and Co, Philadelphia, 1893. Full-Leather. Book Condition: Fair-Good. No Jacket. Frederick Barnard (illustrator). First Edition. 4to - over 9¾" - 12" tall. This is the story of John Bunyan's life, a Christian pilgrim in England, written for older children. It contains 327 indexed pages with reference to the Bible. It also contains over 100 woodcut illustrations by Frederick Barnard and others. The frontispiece is beautifully done in color and has tissue intact. The condition of the inside of the book is very good. The gilt pages are clean and free of tears and folds. There are no signatures. The burgundy embossed cover appears to be leather. It shows a man standing in front of Christ on the cross, with the sun in gold coming up and the title encased in a gold box. The cover shows wear; the corners are very scuffed and the spine is missing a top 1/2 " of leather and 1.5 " on the bottom, but the material under the leather is intact so the binding is not showing. The binding is tight. Is enclosed in a clear plastic sleeve. Bookseller Inventory # 000396

Item Description: Faber and Faber, London, 1947. First printing of this modern illustrated edition of John Bunyan's Puritan allegory The Pilgrim's Progress, originally published in 1678 (Part I) and 1684 (Part II). The pilgrim Christian forsakes the City of Destruction and makes his way to the Celestial City, encountering crises and temptations on his journey. Based on the geography of his native Bedfordshire, Bunyan's imaginative landscape contributed a number of common expressions to the English language, including the Slough of Despond, House Beautiful, and Vanity Fair, the glittering marketplace where Christian and his companion are imprisoned: "One chanced mockingly, beholding the carriages of the men, to say unto them, What will ye buy? But they, looking gravely upon him, answered, We buy the truth." Pilgrim's Progress inspired generations of illustrators, including John Sturt, John Flaxman, and William Blake. Edward Ardizzone, who produced the simple line drawings for this edition, credited a nineteenth-century illustrated edition of Bunyan with inspiring him to become an artist. A near-fine copy of a spiritual classic, in a bright unrestored dust jacket, much nicer than usually found. Octavo, original red pictorial cloth stamped in dark blue and lettered in gilt, original unclipped pictorial dust jacket. Light edgewear to jacket, with short closed tear to head of front panel and tiny chips to head of spine. Bookseller Inventory # 100387
