Book Description: London - Hugh Cunningham, 1841. Hardcover. Book Condition: Very Good. First edition. Old St. Paul's: A Tale of the Plague and the Fireis a novel by William Harrison Ainsworth first serially published in 1841. It is a historical romance that describes the events of the Great Plague of London and the Great Fire of London. With twentylovely engraved illustrations by John Franklin. First edition thus. In three volumes complete. William Harrison Ainsworth (1805 - 1882) was an English historical novelist. Ainsworth briefly tried the publishing business, but soon gave it up and devoted himself to journalism and literature. His first success as a writer came with Rookwood in 1834, which features Dick Turpin as its leading character. A stream of thirty-nine novels followed, the last of which appeared in 1881. Old St. Paul's was not illustrated by George Cruikshank, the illustrator of many of Ainsworth's works, and this caused problems between the two. It is uncertain why Ainsworth did not choose Cruikshank, and Cruikshank criticised Ainsworth in a pamphlet titled Artist and Author (1872). In the work, Cruikshank claims that he originated many of Ainsworth's works along with being the one that came up with the idea for Old St. Paul's and that Ainsworth stole the idea. The original edition was not illustrated, but John Franklin made 20 illustrations for the three volume edition. Cruikshank was originally offered the position of illustrator before Franklin, but he turned it down due to too many prior commitments. Condition: In half morocco bindings with marbled paper covered boards. Externally, generally smart but with slight wear to extremities and the odd mark to boards. Front joint starting to one volume with backstrip liftingslightly. Two hinges strained. Internally, firmly bound but with one plate loose to volume one, all plates are present. Bright and generally clean but with offsetting from some plates to opposite pages, the odd spot and handling mark. Overall: GOOD. Bookseller Inventory # 027298

Book Description: Parry, Blenkarn & co 1847, 1847. First Octavo edition and first edition to be illustrated by Hablot Knight Browne (Phiz) . Original publisher's cloth. This is a cloth variant compared with Wolff's copy (64b). Elaborate blind scroll desin to boards. Gilt blocked picture title old saint Pauls to front board, three gilt pictures to spine, titled and tail dated 1847. Light yellow endpapers. Frontis and vignette by Phiz. pp.434.Illustrations by John Franklin. Nice wide margined papges. The cloth is bright but is showing some age wear. Bottom board extremities have wear to corners with some loss and fraying.Slight mark and loss of cloth to front board margin. Spine extremities are a little worn and rubbed but overall fair to good cloth. Frontis and vignette with a little top margin staining and the occasional light margin stain but overall tight and clean copy. I can not find reference to this cloth variant but the tail date suggests it is contemporary with book issue. Unusual. Bookseller Inventory # 5604
