NORTHANGER ABBEY PERSUASION Dec. 1817, Copyright 1818; Jane Austen; True First Edition; London, John Murray; Rebound Cloth; Half Titles in Vol. I/II only; XXIV, 300, 331, 280, 308 Pages; w4.5"xh7.2"; Extremely Rare!!! Great For any Fan of the Famous Author/Classics or Collector. Great Gift Idea; Two Classics in One; Complete in Four Volumes!!! ATTRIBUTES: Four blue paper cover designs with navy blue cloth bindings with gold labeling and Two Great Classics from the Legendary Author; With Biography!!! SUMMARIES: Northanger Abbey was the first of Jane Austen's novels to be completed for publication, though she had previously made a start on Sense and Sensibility and Pride and Prejudice. According to Cassandra Austen's Memorandum, Susan (as it was first called) was written circa 1798–99. It was revised by Austen for the press in 1803, and sold in the same year for £10 to a London bookseller, Crosby & Co., who decided against publishing. In the spring of 1816, the bookseller was content to sell it back to the novelist's brother, Henry Austen, for the exact sum—£10—that he had paid for it at the beginning, not knowing that the writer was by then the author of four popular novels. The novel was further revised by Austen in 1816/17, with the intention of having it published. Among other changes, the lead character's name was changed from Susan to Catherine, and Austen retitled the book Catherine as a result. Austen died in July 1817. Northanger Abbey (as the novel was now called) was brought out posthumously in late December 1817 (1818 given on the title page), as the first two volumes of a four-volume set that also featured another previously unpublished Austen novel, Persuasion. Neither novel was published under the title Jane Austen had given it; the title Northanger Abbey is presumed to have been the invention of Henry Austen, who had arranged for the book's publication. Persuasion is Jane Austen's last completed novel. She began it soon after she had finished Emma and completed it in August 1816. She died, at age 41, in 1817; Persuasion was published in December of that year (but dated 1818). Persuasion is linked to Northanger Abbey not only by the fact that the two books were originally bound up in one volume and published together, but also because both stories are set partly in Bath, a fashionable city with which Austen was well acquainted, having lived there from 1801 to 1805. BACKGROUND: Jane Austen (16 December 1775 – 18 July 1817) was an English novelist whose works of romantic fiction, set among the landed gentry, earned her a place as one of the most widely read writers in English literature. Her realism, biting irony and social commentary as well as her acclaimed plots have gained her historical importance among scholars and critics. CONDITION: Conditions are Good. Some wear to edges/corners, missing some paper at corners, clipped top of first end page, first/last few pages are delicate, spot or blemish here and there throughout, age toned pages, pages darker in person, small tear/blemish spot to pg 54/55 in vol. III affecting a word or two, would handle pages with care, text blocks are good, would get rebound, no half titles to two vols., missing first/last blanks to vol.IV. Overall, for close to 200 years old they're in Good Condition!!!. Bookseller Inventory # ABE-15726214706

Item Description: London John Murray, 1818. First Edition of "Northanger Abbey and Persuasion" [AUSTEN, Jane]. Northanger Abbey: and Persuasion. By the Author of "Pride and Prejudice," "Mansfield-Park," &c. With a Biographical Notice of the Author. In Four Volumes. London: John Murray, 1818. First edition. Four twelvemo volumes. [2], xxiv, 300; [4], 331, [1, blank]; [4], 280; [4], 308, [4, blanks] pp. Bound with old and incorrect half-titles. Early 20th full smooth tan morocco by Riviere, covers ruled in gilt, spines decoratively tooled in gilt, gilt turn-ins, black and red morocco gilt lettering labels. All edges gilt. Bookplate on front pastedown of each volume. Light foxing throughout. Some light rubbing to spine extremities and outer hinge repair to all volumes. All in all, a handsome set. "A considerable amount of discussion has centered around the composition of Northanger Abbey. The facts appear to be that the novel was written in 1797-98 with the title Susan, and that it was sold for 10 pounds in the spring of 1803 to Messrs. Crosby & Co.It was actually announced for publication in Crosby's Flowers of Literature, 1803, but in spite of this was not printed. On April 5, 1809 Jane Austen addressed a letter.to Crosbie & Co., asking why the book had not been printed and offering to supply a copy of the MS. if the other draft had been lost. This letter was written from Southampton and signed M. A. D. It was acknowledged by Richard Crosby, who offered in his reply to restore the MS. for the same sum as had been paid in 1803, and there the matter was allowed to drop. Seven years later, in 1816, negotiations were re-opened and the MS. was bought back for 10 pounds, Crosby still being unaware of the identity of the author. In 1809 a novel called Susan was published by another author, and Miss Austen changed the name of her work to Catherine. The publication of the book under this name was still being discussed in March 1817. Ultimately the name was changed to Northanger Abbey, and the novel was not printed until after the author's death, with a biographical note by her brother Henry. Persuasion, the latest of the novels, was begun in 1815 and completed on July 18, 1816" and published in December 1817 (Keynes, p. 18-19). Gilson A9. Keynes, Austen, 9. Sadleir 62e.
