Item Description: London: Freemantle & Co. / Philadelphia: J. B. Lippincott Co., 1900. Hardcover. Book Condition: Very Good. 1st Edition. First American edition, n. d. [1900]; 6" x 8"; pp. [4], v-xvii, [1], 1-464; original pictorial boards; deckled fore-edge; gilt top edge; minor fading to boards; some rubbing to tips of spine (small closed cut to bottom edge); slight vertical line through front cover; pages mostly very clean with a few faint spots of foxing limited to first and last several pages; illustrated with color fronts and 100 b & w full-page illustrations; very good or better. "A New Translation by Mrs. Edgar Lucas." The original Rackham-illustrated "Grimm's Fairy Tales," which brought Arthur Rackham his enormous fame and prompted the publishing of the 1909 deluxe signed edition. The great illustrator himself pointed out in the 1909 edition's prefatory note: "Some years ago a selection of "Grimm's Fairy Tales" with one hundred illustrations of mine in black and white was published - in 1900, by Messrs. Freemantle and Co., and afterwards by Messrs. Archibald Constable & Co., Ltd. At intervals since then I have been at work on the original drawings, partially or entirely re-drawing some of them in colour, adding new ones in colour and in black and white, and generally overhauling them as a set, supplementing and omitting, with a view to the present edition. Of the forty coloured illustrations, many are elaborations of the earlier black and white drawings or are founded on them. The frontispiece, and those facing pp. 34, 70, 94, 104, 116, 118, and 190 are entirely new, and several of the text illustrations also have not been published before. The remaining illustrations in the text have been reconsidered and worked on again to a greater or lesser degree.". Bookseller Inventory # 000144

Item Description: Doubleday, Page & Company, New York, 1909. Hard Cover. Book Condition: Good. No Jacket. Rackham, Arthur (illustrator). First Edition. 4to - over 9¾" - 12" tall. Book has been painstakingly reassembled from original parts. Book has been rebacked in cloth, but most of original leather spine (featuring gilt lettering and Rackham illustrations) has been preserved and is glued over cloth. Spine leather is slightly darkened from consolidation/restoration process and is still a bit fragile. Book has been rehinged, keeping virtually all of Rackham-illustrated endpapers; Japanese tissue is barely visible deep in gutters of endpapers. 1" X 4.5" strip of rear pastedown endpaper has been reattached, but is yellowed from storage with spine. The fore-edges of the half-title and the rear free endpaper are worn and have been reinforced with Japanese tissue. For many years the spine was stored in various parts of book, (between the half-title and opposing reverse of front free endpaper, between pp. 184-185, and between the rear free endpaper and opposing page) yellowing the pages where it was stored. Four other pages have been yellowed from storage of newspaper articles. All tipped-in, color illustrations and tissue guards are present, but the corner of one tissue guard is torn, two of the color illustrations have creased corners, and one color illustration has a small chip missing from corner. The book has occasional, mild foxing; slight age toning to pages, which is more noticeable in margins; wear to edges of green-paper-covered boards; worn corners to boards; and light soiling and wear to green paper on boards. Photos available upon request. 4to - over 9¾" - 12" tall. Bookseller Inventory # 008271

Item Description: Hutchinson and Co, London, 1934. Hardcover. Book Condition: Fair. No Jacket. Joyce Mercer (illustrator). 1st Edition. 4to - over 9¾ - 12" tall. First British printing of this edition published by Hutchinson in 1934 (although book is not dated). The book is in worn condition, but it is a rare and beautiful book, with 20 full-colour illustrations by Joyce Mercer. Spine ends and corners are damaged, back board illustrations are worn and there are pen scribbles on the front cover. The cover is, nevertheless a wonderful work of art and may merit restoration. Some spotting to the internals and endpapers and some crayoning, inscriptions and price marks on the endpapers. Hinges fine, but spine cracking away from boards towards end of the book. Wonderful cover art, full colour and B/W illustrations throughout by popular book illustrator Joyce Mercer known for her Art Deco style illustrations for Hans Christian Anderson. The wonder of this book is that all 20 plates, including the frontispiece are in fine condition. This is one of only two copies of this book on the market, albeit this one is in a poorer state than the other copy. Photographs are available. Bookseller Inventory # 000107

Item Description: London, George G. Harrap and Co., n.d. ( circa 1919 )., 1919. First Edition. Very good indeed. Includes all six full page illustrations in colour ( with frontispiece ), as well as six full page pen-drawings and two half-page drawings. All of these are bright and attractive and the text leaves are foxed, as is usual. There is a school prize plate dated 1919 tipped in on the front free endpaper. The very attractive full colour pictorial boards are pristine, having been protected by the dust jacket. The dust jacket itself has been well-preserved by virtue of the fact that it has been protected in loosely folded brown paper for much of its existence. Raised plate on front of dust jacket still bright. but the dust jacket does have some minor edgewear including closed tears and creases, else very good. Inner hinges fine, no mold or brittle pages, only foxing on edges, dust jacket NOT clipped, and no original price on dust jacket , 5 color full page illustrations all present, little red cap and Cinderella, Snow White and Rose Red, and a whole bunch of others. Hardback. With dj. Bookseller Inventory # 62161
