Henry Justice Ford's (1860-1941) artwork for Lang's books "provided a benchmark in fantasy illustration" (Grolier). Octavo. Original red cloth, spine lettered and stamped with chivalric device in gilt, front cover gilt-blocked with a knight on horseback saving a maiden from a dragon, illustrated endpapers, edges gilt. Colour frontispiece with tissue guard, 8 colour plates, 28 uncoloured engraved plates, further engravings in the text, all by H. J. Ford. Spine mildly sunned, gilt unaffected and bright, bumps to spine ends, cosmetic splits to front inner hinge, contents clean. A near-fine copy.

    First Edition

First edition of the fourth instalment in Lang's popular "Fairy Book" series, beautifully illustrated by Henry Justice Ford. The Yellow Fairy Book compiles tales from around the world, including well known stories such as "The Emperor's New Clothes" and "Thumbelina". An extremely prolific artist, Ford (1860 1941) began exhibiting his paintings at the Royal Academy of Art in 1892. It was his work as book illustrator, however, that gained him worldwide fame in the 1880s and 1890s. Ford "concentrated on legends and folklore as subjects to illustrate and mixed carefully observed objects from the real world with fantasy creatures from an imaginary world in a very convincing way. His penwork is assured and clear and placed on the page with great decorative effect. A whole generation of Edwardians grew up on Ford's illustrations to Andrew Lang's Fairy tales" (Houfe, p. 140). Simon Houfe, Dictionary of 19th Century Book Illustrators, 1998. Octavo (183 x 124 mm). Contemporary yellow half morocco, spine with raised bands, gilt lettering and floral decoration in compartments, marbled boards and endpapers, top edge gilt, others untrimmed. Frontispiece, 21 plates, title vignette, and numerous in-text illustrations by H. J. Ford. Extremities lightly rubbed, minor marks to leather, edges foxed, contents generally bright and clean. A very good copy, attractively bound.

    First Edition

First edition of the third title in the Fairy Books series. Its 42 stories includes the famous tales "Three Little Pigs" and "The Story of the Three Bears". Henry Justice Ford's (1860-1941) artwork for the series "provided a benchmark in fantasy illustration" (Grolier). Though the Fairy Books are credited to Andrew Lang (1844-1912), he acknowledged in the preface to Lilac (1910) that they "have been almost wholly the work of Mrs [Leonora] Lang, who has translated and adapted them from the French, German, Portuguese, Italian, Spanish, Catalan, and other languages". Loosely inserted is the publisher's four-page pamphlet advertising the Fairy Books. It includes two illustrations by Ford: they depict chivalric figures reading Lang's collections of romance, and fairy figures reading from his main fairy series. The pamphlet's text prints a poem by St John Lucas, entitled "The Fairy Books", and the list of titles is annotated by a former owner to mark their holdings. Grolier Children's 100, 51. Octavo. Original green cloth, spine lettered and stamped in gilt with device of a bee abducting Princess Rosanella, front cover with large gilt block depicting the fairy Gorgonzola riding a dragon, black coated endpapers, edges gilt. Frontispiece with tissue guard, 11 engraved plates, further engravings in the text, all by H. J. Ford. Publisher's 2-page ads bound at end. Spine darkened, rubbing to cloth, gilt unaffected and bright, gentle bowing to rear cover, sporadic foxing to leaves. A very good copy.
