Octavo, original laminated pictorial boards, without a dust jacket as issued. Association copy, inscribed by the author on the dedication page, "to Bryony - who is the most important person I've ever met in a signing queue & the first person ever to see merit in Harry Potter. With huge [underlined 4 times] thanks. J.K. Rowling." Additionally signed and with a large original drawing by cover illustrator Thomas Taylor. The recipient, Bryony Evens was one of the first people to read the opening chapters of Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone, the first to recognize the workâ s inherent value, and perhaps the most instrumental figure in getting the book published. Working at the time at Christopher Little Literary Agency in Scotland, Evens was the first point of contact in receiving and sorting unsolicited manuscripts. Evens read Rowlingâ s submission of the first three chapters of the book and passed it along to Little, who approved that she obtain the full manuscript and promote it to suitable publishers. Given a small budget, Evens was only able to print three manuscripts to pitch to publishing houses and, after twelve months and twelve rejections, was finally given the green light by editor Barry Cunningham from Bloomsbury in London. Bloomsbury published the book on June 26, 1997. A year later, Bryony attended a Harry Potter book signing event where Rowling received her with open arms and warmly inscribed the present volume. Rowling was working as a researcher and bilingual secretary for Amnesty International in 1990 when she conceived the idea for the Harry Potter series while on a delayed train from Manchester to London. The seven-year period that followed saw the death of her mother, birth of her first child, divorce from her first husband, and relative poverty. A true "rags to riches" story, the publication of the present volume would bring her from living on benefits to billionaire status. She was named the world's first billionaire author by Forbes in 2014 and the Harry Potter series has become the best-selling book series of all time.     Condition: Very Good. First Edition, galley proof. EARLIEST KNOWN COPY OF HARRY POTTER; NO OTHER COPIES LOCATED. On February 26, 1997, this remarkable complete set of galley sheets was sent to the distinguished children's author and literary critic Fiona Waters. In the cover letter accompanying the galley (included here), Rosamund Walker, Children's Marketing Manager of Bloomsbury Publishing wrote, "Further to our conversation, I have enclosed a manuscript for your interest as promised. Once you've had a chance to have a look, I would really appreciate it if you could let me know your comments for pre-publication quotes." The "manuscript," already rejected by twelve other publishers, was Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone. Waters read these advance galley sheets during a long train journey to Scotland and was immediately captivated by the tale of a young wizard named Harry Potter. While it was Ms. Waters' usual practice to discard galleys after reading them, she retained this one because she believed Harry Potter was a truly special and distinctive book. She wrote back to Bloomsbury Publishing with effusive praise, making a special point of noting that "There is something about Harry Potter that reminds me of Charlie Bucket in Charlie and the Chocolate Factory." In replying to Waters' letter, Rosamund Walker wrote that "I'm sure the author will be most flattered with the allusion to Charlie Bucket" - and indeed she was: for the statement was featured prominently on the back cover of the first edition. Historically significant, this is the only known set of advance galley sheets to have survived. It precedes the early June publication of some 200 bound proof copies as well as the first edition that famously appeared on June 26. Intended as they were for prominent reviewers, only a handful of such galleys were produced. Our copy belonged to a lead reviewer whose endorsement undoubtedly helped make the book the spectacular success it became. As Ms. Waters (who signed this galley on the first page) tells it, in recalling her first meeting with J. K. Rowling: "It was very shortly after the first book was published and I was invited to a party by Bloomsbury to celebrate it all. And when I was introduced to her [J. K. Rowling], she flung her arms around me and said, Oh, you are the lovely lady who gave me that wonderful review!" Note: By the late 1990s -well into the digital age of printing - publishers generally did not issue traditional galleys printed from a printing press, but rather printed a set of sheets from a file and copied them for distribution to a limited set of reviewers. The front panels also bear the HP acronym familiar from the film franchise a lovely touch. An amazing collection and unique chance to obtain the only four uncorrected proofs produced in the entire Harry Potter series. When Rowling published the fourth instalment Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire (2000) no proofs were issued as the publisher feared that the text could be leaked. This policy was kept for the remaining books as well and without any spoiler leaks kids and adults were queuing up bookstores at midnight of the respective publication dates in order to obtain a copy and start reading the continuation of the Potter saga. The uncorrected proofs contain a number of errors which were later corrected such as a J.A. instead of J.K. Rowling on the copyright page of the Philosopher s Stone copy. Nowadays J.K. Rowling is such a household name that nobody in the world would make such an error but back in 1997 Rowling was an unknown persona. Only 500 copies of the first hardback of Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone were published, 300 of which were distributed directly to libraries, and only 200 copies were sold privately. This is one of these extremely rare latter copies, with a signed Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone illustrated bookplate loosely inserted. The latter is combined with a letter from J.K. Rowling s office. Printing number line: 10 - 1; Wendy Cooling quote to the front cover; '1 wand' twice on page 53; 'Philospher's' on the back cover; 'Wizardry and Witchcraft' [rather than 'Witchcraft and Wizardry'] to the back cover. No Dust Jacket as issued. Dedication with the date November 14, 1997, on the title page from parents to their 7-year-old daughter; below that is the name of the original owner in blue felt-tip pen. There are a couple of small dents to the front cover, and there is a small, light circular stain on page 84. For conservation purposes, the pages of the book have been made acid-free by a renowned conservator, from whom a certificate is issued. The lifespan of the book has increased fivefold thanks to this intensive treatment, protecting the pages from decay. In addition, Marchelma van Breugel, the worlds leading expert on modern paper conservation and restoration, did some minor restoration work to the covers of the book. The book is housed in a contemporary storage box with an inlaid image, lined with moleskin inside. The signed bookplate is accompanied by a Letter of Authenticity (LoA) from Adam Houston (TheHarryPotterSpecialist), the world's sole J.K.     Hardcover. Condition: Very Good. No Jacket. 1st Edition. HARDBACK - A very good or better example, one of the very rare 500 true first edition copies published by Bloomsbury in 1997. The publisher's laminated boards are in excellent condition with the mis-spelled Philospher's present to the rear panel, with the Wizardry and Witchcraft, rather than Witchcraft and Wizardry also present. The binding is very well preserved, tight and solid, with the publisher's original laminate entirely present. There are a few light scratches / marks to the laminate in places, with light wear to the corners, also with a little light shelf lean. Internally, the pages are clean and fresh with the usual toning to the page block, due to the cheap paper stock used in the printing of this title. There are a few pages with light folds to the corners. There was a small chip to the bottom corner of page 17, NOT AFFECTING ANY OF THE TEXT which has been expertly repaired by a paper archivist using period Bloomsbury paper. The end result is excellent with just a hairline mark where the paper has been applied. There is also a small repaired closed tear to page 46. There are a few, tiny ink spots to the top page-block. There is a Hampshire School library Service label to the front front end-paper, which is blank thus indicating that the book was never lent out by the library service. There is a Hampshire Library stamp to the copyright page. Included with this book is a Hogwarts Express card, signed by the author, with an accompanying letter of provenance from J K Rowlings P / A Fiddy Henderson, thanking the previous cards owner for their initial letter. Although this is a library copy destined for the library system, it was never lent out and, as such, is a lovely copy with the book in overall, very nice condition. Included with the book is a bespoke felt lined clam shell box with raised bands and with gilt lettering present to the spine. Custom made for the book's future protection. Very rare, and a remarkable survivor. Please be assured that there has been no restoration, re-colouring, or touching up whatsoever to the publisher's patterned boards.

According to Harry Potter expert Peter thepottercollector this is one of less than ten in the world to exist. For Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets there were approximately 300 UK proof copies of the book sent out, of which an unconfirmed amount of less than 10 proof dust jackets accompanied some the books. The dust jacket is completely unrestored, which is extremely rare to find. Many of the copies that have been found had tears, chips, etc and have since been restored and put onto the market. Notice the price difference of £9.99 rather than £10.99 as found on the 1st print trade editions as well as a different quote, this time by Nicolette Jones of the Sunday Times rather than the well know quote by The Bookseller. This copy is in remarkable condition with no tears or chips whatsoever, no colour fading, no creases and is found in fine condition apart from some slight staining to the inside of the rear flap. The staining does not extend to the rear panel of the proof dust jacket and no attempt has been made to remove it. The book itself is an unread copy in exceptional condition. A fine copy, with sharp edges and an incredibly square and tight binding. The slightest mark on the front cover below the word uncorrected otherwise a pristine copy. The page edges are white and crisp, no internal writing or marks of any kind. No bowing to the front wrapper, no creasing to the spine this book has hardly been opened, never mind read.     First edition, fourth printing of the rarest book in the Harry Potter series, a cornerstone of young adult literature, and one of the best-selling books of all time. Octavo, original illustrated wrappers. Presentation copy, "For Jenny, who does believe in magic (I do too, really) (but donâ t tell anyone) J.K. Rowling." Also, with an original drawing of Harry Potter by jacket illustrator Thomas Taylor. The recipient, was the vendor's daughter Jenny, who was seven years old at the time, at the Edinburgh Literary Festival in August 1997. Jenny's mother wrote in her journal for that month "We all went to hear Joanne Rowling reading from her first children's book "Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone" and were so impressed we bought a copy and Ms. Rowling signed it for Jenny. Jenny read "Harry Potter" first, then me and now she is reading it again so Peter has'nt had a chance yet! It really is a very good read". Rowling appeared in the Tepee Tent, the smallest venue at the festival, reading extracts of the book to an audience of less than fifty people. Jenny's mother recalls that "Jenny was aged 7 and very into wizards, magic, fairies and the like so when she took the book to be signed, she had a whispered question for Joanne Rowling - hence the inscription in the book." At the time of the bookâ s publication in 1996, illustrator Thomas Taylor had just graduated from art school and was working at Heffers Childrenâ s Bookshop in Cambridge. Before the release of Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets on July 2, 1998, publisher Bloomsbury sent approximately 300 copies of the proof version of the book to reviewers. Some of these were accompanied by a proof print of the dust jacket. The number of these proof dust jackets that have been preserved is estimated to be fewer than 10, mostly with signs of use. The proof jacket we offer is in exceptionally beautiful condition. The only notable point is a very inconspicuous vertical fold on the back flap. The dust jacket is otherwise in pristine condition, without any fading or damage. The inside of the jacket is also like new. The proof copy of the dust jacket of Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets differs from the later published version in several ways: a thicker lamination was used, the price listed on the front flap is £9.99 compared to the final version's £10.99, the blue 'Smarties Award' circle printed on the jacket is missing, the quote on the front cover is attributed to Nicolette Jones of the Sunday Times, while on the final version, it is attributed to 'The Bookseller'. The text on the back of the dust jacket is printed in a larger font size, and the outline of the ISBN frame is missing. Lastly, the name of the illustrator Cliff Wright is mistakenly spelled as 'Cliffe Wright'. On the right side of the jacket, there is a white strip containing a number of bibliographic specifications of the book.-------- This highly rare proof dust jacket is offered in combination with an unread first printing of Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets. The book is also in near pristine condition (A minuscule dent at the top edge of the front cover prevents a pristine qualification) with sharp spine ends, sharp corners, tight binding, clean pages without inscriptions, signatures, or similar markings, and hardly any toning of the pages. Copies of this title unsigned, in similar condition are extremely scarce, with few even available for sale. The stunning condition soft cover has strong unfaded colors with even the spine colors still being vibrant and withOUT any of common color fading to the spine. The binding is tight and square. The wraps are in great condition with some soft light creasing to the rear panel and only a very soft corner crease to the upper front panel. A few very tiny tip/edge rubs (hard to even see in the images) and no laminate issues,(which is unusual as most copies tend to have fully lifted or missing laminate). The interior pages are very clean, unusually bright and flat with only a hint of age toning. The pages have no handling marks, no writing, no marks, no stains and no foxing, no owners names and no inscriptions. A beautiful clean, bright copy with strongly colored outer wraps, EXTREMELY scarce in this condition! Please see images. Please note hardcover examples of this book have been escalating in price, with a near fine first printing hardcover recently selling at auction for just shy of $125,000. And on the other end of the spectrum ? very very poor condition softcovers with excessively worn, ripped, faded, tattered covers with missing laminate and having interior damage now sell for over $9,000. Those familiar with ?card? or ?comic book? grading would recognize this particular copy should list for many many multiples of a poor condition book.
