Elizabeth Cavendish, widow of William, 5th duke of Devonshire, according to Brunet, financed the production of this book. There were two editions (both with engraved plates and dated 1816), the first limited to 150 copies (of which 60 were distributed by the Duchess to friends and the surplus destroyed) and the second edition limited to 200 copies. The Italian translation for both editions is attributed to Molajoni. A third, quarto, edition was published by Bodoni in Parma in 1818 with a new translation by Cardinal Ercole Consalvi (1754-1824).
