Chevroul, it will be remembered, had had his interest awakened by the exploratory pendulum used in his day by elairvoyants and in drawing-room sfanees. This pendulum, held in the medium s hand, eonsisted of a ring suspended by a hair. The ring hung down into a tumbler or wineglass, and answered questions put to the medium by tapping against the side of the glass, onee or oftener as the ease demanded. Chevreul satisfied himself that the person holding the pendulum was unaware of imparting any movement to it, and he asked himself whether the idea or simple image of a movement would not suffiee to bring about this movement. A theory was eurrent that the oseillations of the pendulum were ampler when the ring was suspended over mereury. Chevreul had little diffieulty in proving that the mereury had no influenee whatever. He demonstrated that the subjeet s thought (not his will) was the sole eause of the oseillations. This thought aeted through the intermediation of impereeptible movements, whieh were involuntary and uneonseious (subeonseious). Starting from Chevreul s elassieal experiments, I have devised the following exereises, and every one of my new pupils has to perform them. Materials. Book Description: Theclassics.Us, United States, 2013. Paperback. Book Condition: New. 246 x 189 mm. Brand New Book ***** Print on Demand *****.This historic book may have numerous typos and missing text. Purchasers can usually download a free scanned copy of the original book (without typos) from the publisher. Not indexed. Not illustrated. 1922 edition. Excerpt: . CHAPTER FOUR AFFECTIVE SUGGESTIONS (Sensations, Emotions, the Peripheral Theory of Emotion) As we pass from the representative sphere to the affective sphere, sensations provide us with a natural stepping-stone. As a general rule, sensations are simultaneously affective and representative. Certain sensations of heat and cold, and to a still greater degree certain visceral sensations, are often attended with pain which may preponderate very markedly over the representative element. The idea of a sensation of pleasure or pain, the idea of. a feeling, tends to become this pleasure, this pain, or this feeling. Here, again, we have to point out that such an idea is rather a schema than an image properly so called. When we think of a pain, we feel (unless our representation be purely verbal) a sort of reduced copy of the pain, as if we had only just experienced it, and as if a faint trace of it, a vague emotional echo of it, still remained. The vividness of this echo varies in different persons. There are some who, directly they hear any physical suffering spoken of, promptly display upon their faces the customary signs of pain. The forehead becomes furrowed, the corners of the mouth are spasmodically raised. This implies that one who thinks of a pain, begins to feel it, has already a rough sketch of it in his sensorium. If, now, the attention becomes unduly concentrated upon this sketch, this schema, or if the attention returns to it too often, suggestion is unleashed. The same considerations apply to every kind of affective state. As far as visceral sensations are concerned, Herbert Parkyn, in his excellent manual of autosuggestion,1 records the following incident. It has its amusing side, so that it sticks in the memory. A New York visitor. Bookseller Inventory # APC9781230454108

From love and from the analysis the subject expects what he terms a cure ; that is to say, the victory which will give him extroversion and ease. I had enabled him to recognise in himself the existence of the tendency towards femininity, and it was at this juncture that he brought me three quotations, extremely significant--passages by which he had been greatly struck when he had read them in earlier days. From Catulle Mendes, Pour lire an bain: What other poet is so feminine as the divine Amarou, whose soul had lived in the body of a hundred women? From Han Ryner (one of Otto s favourite authors), Le manuel individualiste: Seneca speaks of Epicurus as a hero disguised as a woman. From La Bruyere, Caracdres: I have known more than one person who, from thirteen to twenty-two, wanted to be a girl, a pretty girl, and then to become a man. The third of these quotations is peculiarly significant, inasmuch as it was at the age of twentytwo that the subject had his first experience of normal sexual relations. VI. One evening, when Otto came away from his mistress, he was thinking about his own pecuniary position, which did not allow him to support her on the scale he would have liked.--That night he dreamed that France had gone bankrupt; French money was now worthless; consequently, he had lost 300 marks.--He went for a walk in the woods with a friend. They found an inn there; an orchestra was playing Viennese music, his favourite music. France is a symbol for his mistress, who is a Frenchwoman. The psychoanalyst is also of French. In any case, we must point out that the images relating to the analysis are strangely contiguous to the images relating to love.
