First edition, privately printed by the author (preceding all other editions) one of only 250 copies of this children's classic. 12 mo, original cloth, illustrated, leaf patterned end-papers. Presentation copy, inscribed by the author in the year of publication on the front free endpaper, "for Mrs Oliver, fromÂBeatrixÂPotter- with kind regards and best wishes for Christmas 1901." The book was an instant success: Linda Lear writes that "Even before the publication of the tale in early October 1902, the first 8,000 copies were sold out. By the year's end there were 28,000 copies of The Tale of Peter Rabbit in print. By the middle of 1903 there was a fifth edition sporting colored endpapers . a sixth printing was produced within the month," and a year after the first commercial publication there were 56,470 copies in print. It has now been translated into 45 languages and has sold 45 million copies, making it one of the most successful children's books of all time. In very good condition, small name. Housed in a custom half morocco clamshell box made by the Harcourt Bindery. Exceptionally scarce, most rare and desirable inscribed and signed. In 1893, young Beatrix Potter, on holiday with her parents in Scotland, composed a letter to cheer Noel, the child of her former governess, who was suffering from rheumatic fever. "My dear Noel," she began, "I shall tell you a story about four little rabbits, whose names were Flopsy, Mopsy, Cottontail and Peter " The Tale of Peter Rabbit was born. Undaunted by multiple publishers' rejections, Potter published the first two private editions of Peter Rabbit at her own expense, both editions totaling only 450 copies which immediately sold. Publisher Frederick Warne agreed to print the first trade edition of Peter Rabbit and presented for the first time the now-familiar format of Potter's books: the earlier black-and-white line drawings replaced by full-color illustrations and the famous prancing image of Peter mounted on the front cover. "There are no recognizable differences between the first three printings, except that green boards were introduced after the first printing" (Linder, 421).

First edition. Original folded card covers illustrated in colour by Potter, enclosing seven card leaves tied at the spine with the original silk tasselled tie. All edges gilt. A near fine copy with light wear to the spine fold, though much less than usual, and a faint crease to the upper corner. An exceptionally bright and crisp copy and very rare indeed in such a state. Housed in a full morocco clamshell box. Illustrated internally with six exquisite chromolithographs by Potter, one of which is duplicated on the upper cover. The first work to contain illustrations by Beatrix Potter, preceding The Tale of Peter Rabbit by some eleven years, and of legendary scarcity. In the summer of 1889 the twenty four year old Beatrix Potter had bought herself a pet rabbit. "I brought him home from a London bird shop in a paper bag. His existence was not observed by the nursery authorities for a week.". She christened him Benjamin Bouncer, and he was to be the model to satisfy her voracious appetite for drawing. "One of the greatest admirers of her work was her uncle, and when he heard that she had set her heart on buying a printing press but had not enough money for it, he suggested she might try to earn some by selling her drawings. With this encouragement, Beatrix set about preparing six designs, using Benjamin Bouncer as her model. and when they were disappointedly rejected by the first firm on the list by return of post, Walter [her brother] took the drawings by hand to the next firm, Hildesheimer & Faulkner, on his way through London. Mr. Faulkner bought them on the spot for £6 and then asked to see more of the artist's work." (Judy Taylor) The drawings were used for Christmas cards but also collected into this ephemeral little booklet to accompany a set of verses by Frederic Weatherly, thus launching Potter's career as an author-illustrator.

First edition, UK issue, number 26 of 100 copies only. A touching presentation copy, inscribed by Potter on the front free endpaper, "To Mr & Mrs Wight of Graythwaite - in affectionate remembrance - from Beatrix Heelis. June. 10th 1930", together with an autograph letter from Potter to the Wights laid-in. The letter consoles the Wights on the loss of Mollie, their daughter, and states that she had had it in mind to bring a copy of the book over for her: "I hope time is softening the pain of parting and that you can take comfort in thinking of her safe from the storms and cold of this earthly pilgrimage." She writes of her plans to visit soon, and notes an amusing anecdote of Mrs Wight's father ("I was taken aback when I joked about Mount Everest and he said he had been there!"). Several years later this copy made a serendipitous journey: it was mistakenly sold by Mrs Wight to a Kendal bookseller, resold to a bookseller in Hertford, and finally purchased by Leslie Linder. In a letter laid-in from Linder to Mrs Wight, he returns the book to its rightful owner, and asks in return not for payment but for any memories Mrs Wight might have of Potter. There is no record of Mrs Wight's reply, but Linder's response to her note also accompanies the book, thanking her "for the account of Mrs Heelis. I know from experience that notes like these are not written in five minutes." A photograph of Mr and Mrs Wight is also laid in. Linder p. 431; Quinby 29. Large octavo. Original grey green boards with dark green cloth spine, front cover lettered in black, all edges untrimmed. Housed in a custom blue velvet-lined folding box. 6 colour and numerous monochrome illustrations in the text by the author. Spine ends rubbed, front hinge split but holding, some spotting to first few leaves.

Quarto, original pictorial cloth, pictorial endpapers, illustrated with 12 color plates, each with facing outlined illustration intended for coloring-in, two of which have been hand-painted. The recipient, Mary Kynaston, was Headmistress at Queen's College in London, an independent school for girls aged 11â "18 which was the first institution in the world to award academic qualifications to women and the first girls' school to be granted a Royal Charter for the furtherance of women's education. In near fine condition. Housed in a custom clamshell box. Beatrix Potter wrote and illustrated thirty books throughout the course of her lifetime, the best-known being her charming twenty-three children's tales featuring animals, including The Tale of Peter Rabbit which she self-published in her thirties after multiple publisher's rejections. The book was was so well-received upon publication in 1902, that within just a few weeks she requested a second impression. Now firmly established as a popular writer and illustrator, Potter began writing full time and went on to produce such endearing stories as The Tale of The Flopsy Bunnies, The Tale of Benjamin Bunny, The Tale of Mrs. Tiggy-Winkle, The Tale of Tom Kitten, and The Tale of Squirrel Nutkin, among others. With the proceeds from the books and a legacy from an aunt, Potter bought Hill Top Farm in Near Sawrey in 1905 and over the following decades, purchased additional farms to preserve the unique hill country landscape of the Lake District of Lancashire.

First published edition, first issue (printed October 1903), with a single-page endpaper occurring four times. Twelvemo (5 7/16 x 4 1/16 inches; 139 x 105 mm.). 85, [1, printer's imprint] pp. Color frontispiece and twenty-six color plates (included in pagination). Seventeen illustrations are entirely new for this edition; eleven of the illustrations are repeated from the December 1902 privately printed edition. Original maroon boards ruled and lettered in white on front cover and lettered in white on spine. Color pictorial label on front cover within a blind panel in the shape of a truncated pyramid outlined in blind. Color pictorial endpapers (Quinby Plate I, a single-page endpaper occurring four times). Minimal fading to spine. Small circular bookseller's label on rear pastedown. Otherwise a spectacular copy in very fine condition. Housed in a quarter brown morocco clamshell case with felt lining. In the rare correct glazed paper glassine dust jacket printed in black with the price "1/- NET" at foot of spine, an advertisement for "The Peter Rabbit Books" on the back panel listing The Tale of Peter Rabbit, The Tale of Squirrel Nutkin, and The Tailor of Gloucester, and with vertical lines at the top and bottom of the spine indicating where the fold should come for the front panel. The jacket has a few very small chips along the top edge (the largest being a 3/8 inch piece missing at the top of the spine), but is certainly the finest jacket for this title that we have ever seen. "The year 1903 appears on the front of the title-page of the first two printings. The first printing [October 1903] has a single-page end-paper occurring four times, and the second printing [December 1903], a double-page end-paper occurring twice. In the art fabric de-luxe edition, some copies have the usual frontispiece, others have the cover picture in its place. Both pictures were printed on one sheet, which was cut in half, and each half used as a tipped-in frontispiece. With this binding there was no cover picture" (Linder, p. 423). Linder, p. 423. Quinby 4. V & A 1576.

First edition, one of 100 copies to be privately printed by the author. Small 4to. Cloth backed blue-grey paper covered boards with title printed on upper cover in black. A fine copy. Exceptionally clean and crisp. Internally perfect and largely unopened. Illustrated by Beatrix Potter with six colour plates and numerous black and white line drawings. This book, which is of a semi-autobiographical nature, was written from Potter's personal jottings about her beloved Lakeland and its people. "She had no intention of producing another book until Alexander McKay came over from Philadelphia and persuaded her to do so. It was intended that this book should be published only in America, and would contain some of her writings about her farm animals in a fairy caravan setting. Beatrix Potter did not wish for an English edition of The Fairy Caravan, because she felt the stories were 'too personal - too autobiographical'. Her next concern was to obtain English copyright. So she asked for one hundred sets of sheets to be sent over in order to have them bound privately. This was done by George Middleton, printers and publisher's Ambleside, Westmorland. In the privately bound copies of the The Fairy Caravan, the first eighteen pages of the American edition, including the preface and the dedication page, were discarded and a new set of pages printed at Ambleside. An additional page was added on which were sketches of dogs that she knew, with there names written underneath." (Linder - The History of the Writings of Beatrix Potter).

    First Edition

First edition, first printing, deluxe issue. Beatrix Potter showed an avid interest in the design of her books. When Warne issued The Tale of Peter Rabbit in paper boards and in cloth at a higher price, Potter complained that "there was not sufficient difference between the two styles of bindings" and that "If the cloth binding had been more distinctly different, and pretty, there might have been more inducement to buy it". For the sequel to Peter Rabbit, Potter designed this binding which sold at 1/6d over standard copies at 1/-. Quinby 16. Sextodecimo. Original green fine-grain cloth, spine and front cover lettered in gilt, front cover with pictorial label, pictorial endpapers, gilt edges. Housed in a custom green cloth folding box. Frontispiece and 26 colour illustrations by the author. Minor rubbing to corners, a near fine copy, exceptionally bright and fresh.

    First Edition

First edition, first impression, one of 500 copies privately printed for the author a year before Warne's trade edition, issued in the same month and in a similar format to the second privately printed edition of The Tale of Peter Rabbit. The text of this edition is considerably longer than that of the first trade edition and the cover incorporates an illustration that was never used again. The Tailor of Gloucester was first written and illustrated for Freda Moore as a Christmas present in 1901. Potter had the tale privately printed, as Warne had not yet published The Tale of Peter Rabbit and she did not think her publishers would want a second book from her so soon. The story is unique in the series, with its period setting (Potter drew the costumes from the collection at the V&A, then the South Kensington Museum), and was based on a true story that Potter had heard while staying with her cousin Caroline Hutton in Gloucestershire. In 1916, Potter inscribed a copy of the Warne edition, stating "this is my own favourite amongst my little books". Leslie Linder notes, however, that "the privately printed edition. was the one she liked better". The author inscribed a copy of the privately printed edition in 1918 and noted "this is my favourite amongst the little books and I like this first edition because it contains more of the old rhymes." Linder, p. 420; Quinby 3. Sextodecimo. Original pink boards, front cover lettered and with vignette in black. Colour frontispiece and 15 colour plates by the author. Browning to covers as usual, browning to endpapers and some foxing to edges: a near-fine copy.

Potter, Beatrix (illustrator). First edition. Potter's comforting tale of a young girl who finds both her pocket handkerchief and a friend in the maternal hedgehog, Mrs. Tiggy-Winkle. Color illustrations throughout offer agrarian quaintness paired with pastoral adventure, a combination common to Potter's stories. Benjamin Bunny and Peter Rabbit make cameo appearances, and Mrs. Tiggy-Winkle is herself a sort of cameo, since Potter cared for a real-life hedgehog of the same name. The other main character, the girl Lucie, is derived from a happy meeting between Potter and a vicar's daughter while on vacation in Cumbria. Bound in brown paper over boards with titling embossed in silver and Potter's illustration of Mrs. Tiggy-Winkle inset at center of upper cover. Slight splay to upper board, faint foxing at edges of text block, else near fine. In extremely scarce original glassine dust wrapper, somewhat chipped at corners and with few instances of mild staining. Laid in is a gift inscription from a previous owner.

Frederick Warne and Co. First edition, first impression, the red variant binding with round pictorial inlay to upper board. In very scarce printed glassine wrapper that has ONE SHILLING NET near the foot of the front panel, with lists of Warne publications to both flaps plus 6 Peter Rabbit Books listed to rear cover, the last being "New Book for 1905. The Tale of Mrs. Tiggy-Winkle." 10 coloured plates and line drawings to text. The first of Potter's works to be published in a large format and the details of her engaging watercolours are even more enjoyable on this scale. The colour plates are printed on one side of the quality paper; the other side is blank. There is occasional very light foxing to a few pages. The lower edge of the boards are very slightly faded. Apart from less then 5mm missing at the head of spine the wrapper is complete and uncreased. The book is unusually fresh and clean and has an unread aspect to it which is unusual for an early first edition of Potter. Postage may be higher than that stated as this book needs to be transported by courier.

London and New York: Frederick Warne, 1911. 16mo, original brown boards, mounted cover illustration, pictorial endpapers, original glassine dust jacket. $5200.First edition of Potter's gift to her devoted American readers, with color frontispiece and 26 color plates, in extremely rare original printed glassine dust jacket.A decade after her most famous creation, Peter Rabbit, debuted on the stage of children's literature, Potter had gained "many American friends and admirers, some of whom were children's librarians. They would also be familiar with grey squirrels like Timmy Tiptoes and his wife Goody, who stored nuts for the winter months and met with various adventures while so doing" (Linder, 208). "The year 1911 appears on the front of the title page of the first two printings, which are believed to be identical" (Linder, 429). With extremely scarce original glassine. Quinby 20.
