Study of African-American psychology and religion and their influence on the slave songs or "spirituals" of the South by this noted Black historiographer, academic, and author. Prof. Thorpe examines religious themes such as Christmas, the Virgin Mary, and the Trinity as well as topics like Names, Oppression, Freedom, and Flight. The author was influenced by historian of religion Mircea Eliade and by a course on "Myths and Symbols" taken at Duke University Divinity School taught by H.B. Partin, a former student of Eliade. African Americans and the Sacred is Thorpe's sequel to the author's 1972 book on race relations, The Old South: A Psychohistory. Inscribed by the author; Ohio State Ph.D. and long-time professor of history at North Carolina Central University, an historically Black university in Durham, North Carolina. Note. 1.
