Reprint, stapled. Condition: Gut. pp. 401-417. From the library of Prof. Wolfgang Haase, long-time editor of the ANRW and the International Journal of the Classical Tradition (IJCT). - Author's name handwritten on cover, otherwise good and very clean. - From the text: Odysseus can be seen as a hero of both action and narration, and it is in some sense the action of narration that is the concern of this paper. In recounting to the Phaiakians the series of his adventures from Troy to Scheria, Odysseus makes us aware that he perceives within his travels a pattern of parallel, but diverging episodes, and he suggests that this pattern of observed correspondences is organically related to his understanding, or interpretation, of these experiences. Although the thirteen episodes of giants and monsters, intoxication and forgetfulness, demigods, and storms narrated by Odysseus to the Phaiakians (Books 9-12) may appear randomly collocated, his telling of these adventures indicates, to the contrary, that they are structured according to a cohesive, over-arching design. Reprint, stapled. Condition: Gut. pp. 69-78. From the library of Prof. Wolfgang Haase, long-time editor of the ANRW and the International Journal of the Classical Tradition (IJCT). - With dedication by the author to W. Haase. - Author's name underlined on cover, otherwise clean. - From the text: When Saturnus came into Latium, exiled from Olympos, Vergil says, the god found a people untaught and scattered among mountains (A. 8.314-25). In leading these people towards civilization, Saturnus introduced them to the pruning fork (cf. Vergil, G. 2.406; falcifer deus, Ovid, F. 1.234), gave laws, and ruled in a golden age of quiet peace (cf. Vergil A. 11.252-54). In the transition from that age to a discolor aetas (A. 8.326), a discolored age characterized by a madness for war and a passion for gain (amor habendi), and the rule of Jupiter, the Jovian sword displaced the agricultural tool, greed and an enthusiasm for Mars displaced an aureate education and Saturnian peace (cf. Vergil, G. 2.536-40). Sprache: Englisch Gewicht in Gramm: 550.
