Heutzutage gehören sie zu den Meisterstücken und sind ein Beweis des schöpferischen Geistes mit dem der Mensch seine Empfindlichkeit und seinen künstlerischen Sinn zum Ausdruck bringt. Gewiß nehmen die in den Museen ausgestellten Masken, wie auch sie den Privatsammlungen angehörigen, nicht mehr unter des glühenden Sonne Afrikas am Freudenrausch des Tanzes teil. // Der schwarze Bildhauer wollte aus diesen Gegenständen Elemente der Macht mit ihren Prinzipien und Gesetzen darstellen: Sie bilden sein ganzes Dasein, er lebt mit ihnen zusammen. Jeder afrikanische Künstler ist ein einzigartiger Schöpfer Die afrikanischen Skulpturen bilden vor allem eine traditionelle und religiöse Kunst, wo alles seine Bedeutung hat. Die Fetische, die Masken und selbst de Maße sind die hauptsächlichen Bestandteile ihres geistlichen und ihres alltäglichen Lebens, und sie sind alle ein Gegenstand großer Ehrfurcht. Sind sie es nicht, die die Kranken heilen, den Regen fallen lassen und die Frauen fruchtbar machen ? Ihnen wendet sich der Afrikaner zu, um gute Ernten zu erzielen. Nur die utilitarische Funktion des Gegenstands interessiert den schwarzen Künstler. Der Gegenstand kann zum Zeremoniell angehören oder rituell sein, aber er darf nie nur für die Ästhetik bestehen. Er ist für einen Europäer schwer zu erläutern, da dieser zu oft sich nur von spekulativen Gründen leiten läßt. Jedoch bleibt der Gegenstand ein wertvolles Dokument, das erlaubt, das gemeinschaftliche Leben der Eingeborenen in Schwarzafrika besser zu verstehen.
