Paperback. Condition: Very Good. Two billion people today identify as Christians, with the implication that Jesus is the focus of their relationship with God, and their way of living in the world. Such followers of Jesus are now more numerous and make up a greater proportion of the world's population than ever before. Despite its decline in the West, Christianity is rapidly increasing in areas such as Africa and China. Richard Bauckham explores the historical figure of Jesus, evaluating the sources and concluding that they provide us with good historical evidence for his life and teaching. In order to place Jesus in his proper historical context, as a Jew from Galilee in the early first century of our era, Bauckham looks at Jewish religion and society in the land of Israel under Roman rule. He explores Jesus' symbolic practices as well as his teachings, looks at his public career and emphasises how his actions, such as healing and his association with notorious sinners, were just as important as his words. Bauckham shows that Jesus was devoted to the God of Israel, with a special focus on God's fatherly love and compassion, and like every Jewish teacher he expounded the Torah, but did so in his own distinctive way. With a discussion about the way Jesus understood himself and what finally led to his death as a criminal on a Roman cross, he concludes by considering the significance Jesus has come to have for Christian faith worldwide. Manuscript / Paper Collectible
See his entry in J. F. Smith, 'The Admission Register of the Manchester School'. 6pp, 12mo. Written in a neat, close hand. In fair condition, lightly aged. Folded three times. A vivid example of the methodology of the nineteenth-century English clerical antiquary. The main subject is the controversialist Richard Montagu (1577-1641), Bishop of Norwich, about whom, in January of the following year (that of his death), Backhouse would publish a letter in 'The Academy' under the title 'The Abbreviations in Bishop Mountagu's [sic] Dedication'. The recipient is not identified. The letter begins: 'My dear Sir, | Please to accept my best thanks for your Post Card. Will you kindly answer one or two more questions?' The questions relate to the 'Antiquities of Norwich', 'Hare's ed', 'the sentence in Browne about Mountagu's papers being sent to Rome'. He transcribes an entry he has found in the Bodleian Catalogue, and reports that he is 'trying also to discover Mountagu's will, to see whether he left directions about his MSS. It is possible that he may have bequeathed them to Nickson'. He states that he is 'in correspondence' with 'Mr. Foley', and gives details of two posthumous works by Montagu. He apologises for 'not returning sooner the papers you kindly sent me about Stationers' Hall'. After a Latin quotation he thanks him 'for sending me some time ago through Mr. Napier your opinion that Mountagu was not on the Committee of 1641'. A very long postscript deals with a number of related topics.

The subject of this letter is Huntingford's 'Pindari Carmina', 'excudit R. Watts sumptibus T. Cadell et W. Davies', published in London in 1814. Watts had been made Printer to the University of Cambridge in 1802, resigning in 1809 because, as Stokes notes in his 'Cambridge Stationers, Printers, Bookbiinders, &c' (1919), 'the Press did not prosper under his rule, although, when he left Cambridge, he did good work as a printer of Oriental volumes'. Between around 1812 and 1815 he was working in Broxbourne. In 1816 he moved to London, where he established the Oriental Type-Foundry, Temple Bar. 2pp., 12mo. In good condition, lightly aged. Huntingford begins by reporting that he 'received the clean sheets' that morning, and by apologising for sending an overweight frank. He continues: 'As this is almost the last time I shall have occasion to write to you, I take the present opportunity to thank you for the ready attention you have paid to my directions in the course of the Work, and to congratulate you on the credit that work will do to the Broxbourne Press, from the beauty of the Types & Paper, and, generally speaking from the great correctness with which it is executed.' In a long postscript he states that he will soon send what 'remains of the Work': 'the Dissertation, the additional Notes from Benedict, & the list of Errata [ ] The remaining clean sheets can be sent in franks.' The postscript concludes: 'The sooner the Work is done, the better; as I believe the school at Winchester is waiting for it. [ Huntingford was a Wykehamist ] Let me know how long it will take to knock up & bind the copies of the work, which you intend to send out, after the printing is finished.'.
