Spine of dustwrapper nice and clean, without fading or browning. No creases or tears. Dustwrapper bright. ***221 pages. 232 mm x 157 mm. ***Contents: Apology, I. Charles Baudelaire (1821-1867), II. Gérard de Nerval (1808-1855), III. Villiers de L'Isle-Adam (1860-1887), IV. Jules Laforgue (1860-1887), V. Tristan Corbière (1845-1875), Arthur Rimbaud (1854-1891), Stéphane Mallarmé (1842-1898). ***'Symbolism was a late 19th-century art movement of French, Russian and Belgian origin in poetry and other arts seeking to represent absolute truths symbolically through language and metaphorical images, mainly as a reaction against naturalism and realism. In literature, the style originates with the 1857 publication of Charles Baudelaire's "Les Fleurs du mal." The works of Edgar Allan Poe, which Baudelaire admired greatly and translated into French, were a significant influence and the source of many stock tropes and images. The aesthetic was developed by Stéphane Mallarmé and Paul Verlaine during the 1860s and 1870s. In the 1880s, the aesthetic was articulated by a series of manifestos and attracted a generation of writers. The term "symbolist" was first applied by the critic Jean Moréas, who invented the term to distinguish the Symbolists from the related Decadents of literature and of art.' [Wiki] ***'Baudelaire, the central figure of the Symbolist group, was born in 1821 and died in 1867; Gérard de Nerval was born in 1808, and Mallarmé died in 1898. Though Mr. Quennell in his five essays employs different starting-points, the aesthetic, the psychological, the historical, his constant purpose has been to depict the whole range and scope of a movement in French literature of the last century which, though only partially known in England, has yearly assumed for us a continuously greater importance, The historical aspect of the book, however, must not be over-stressed; it is primarily a work of aesthetic criticism. The illustrations have been chosen with the object of giving the flavour of the period. On the frontispiece appears a drawing by Baudelaire of his mulatto mistress, Jeanne Duval. The other three drawings are by Constantin Guys, of whom there is a good account in Clive Bel's "Landmarks in Nineteenth Century Painting"'. [Quote taken from the front flap of the dustwrapper] ***A beautifully preserved first edition in a complete example of the original dustwrapper. Of interest to those who collect and read books by and about Charles Baudelaire and also the Symbolist art movement of the late 19th Century. ***For all our books, postage is charged at cost, allowing for packaging: any shipping rates indicated on ABE are an average only: we will reduce the P & P charge where appropriate - please contact us for postal rates for heavier books and sets etc.
