  • 1963 imprimatur 622 pages 4th revised 1-vol edition illustrated [in accordance with the new general rubrics of the Codex Rubricarum (1960) & the typical edition of the Roman Missal (1962)] with marking ribbon In order to execute any piece of music or paint any beautiful picture, the artist has to follow the rules, or otherwise the work will be flawed. The same applies to our beloved Latin Mass, known as the Tridentine Mass, or as Pope Benedict XVI calls it, the extraordinary form of the Roman Rite. In 2006 we came out with the first reprint of Father J. B. O Connell s famous work, the fourth edition of The Celebration of Mass: A Study of the Rubrics of the Roman Missal. This book gives the rules to be followed in executing the Mass in all its forms: low Mass, solemn high Mass, or the various forms of the Requiem Mass. Preserving Christian Publications has reprinted this book four times since 2006. There must be some interest, then, in learning just what it takes to properly say the Mass according to the rules laid down for this most august action. This basic manual or textbook, originally designed for priests and seminarians, not only teaches the correct way to celebrate the traditional Mass, but also includes comments on the nature of the liturgy, liturgical law, the calendar, vestments, and a multitude of related topics. Moreover, laymen may have an interest in discovering the underpinnings of the Mass and what is required of the celebrant. In this way they may have a better appreciation of the priest and his action when he offers the Sacrifice of the Mass. This sewn hardback reprint has a useful ribbon marker that can help locate the page to be studied. Also, the hefty size of this book, with its 622 pages, should provide hours of reflective study to those who are serious about why the priest should be as exact as he can, in following the rules for ministering at the altar of God.
