Hardcover. Condition: New. First. 217pp. With color illustrations. This book Deccani Scroll Paintings is the first comprehensive study of all aspects of a unique tradition of narrative scroll paintings in India. These scrolls have been used for over four hundred years in the north-western region of the present Andhra Pradesh state by Telugu-speaking itinerant picture-showmen belonging to a community entitled to perform before people of certain caste. The book provides hitherto unknown material to scholars about the artists, the picture-showmen, their patron-caste, viewers, performance, stylistic development, influence of the Vijayanagara and Nayaka-period painting on them, technique and material used for painting, and, most importantly, the caste-based legends performed before certain patron-caste people, which, so far were not available to others. This book also surveys historical facts and social conventions prevailing in this part of the Deccan when these works were produced. Although the Deccani scrolls are superior in many respects, when compared to scrolls produced elsewhere in India like, Bengal, Rajasthan, Madhya Pradesh, Gujarat, and Karnataka, and the study about the latter began in the early 1900s, the Deccani scrolls came to the notice of art lovers only after 1965. The scrolls published in this book are the best among examples so far known. The earliest is a rare work of c. 1625; the others were produced between c. 1775 and c. 1900. Great pain was taken to photograph details of these very large-sized works, each about 30 inches wide and over 30 feet long. This book will inspire art scholars and institutions to undertake further research and record additional information about narrative-scrolls tradition of the Deccan for the benefit of scholars and art lovers.

Messages received on the establishment of the Museum in 1976. 4. Extracts from the visitors book. 5. Objects lent for exhibitions. 6. Lectures organised. 7. Selected list of books which have reproduced the Museum's objects. List of illustrations. The art collection of Jagdish and Kamla Mittal Museum of Indian Art Hyderabad has been widely perceived since its establishment in 1976 as one of the pre eminent assemblages of Indian art in the world. The Museum was a major lender to the Festivals of India in UK (1982) and USA (1985) and a large number of important books and journals have reproduced works from its collection. However the museum does not have a building where its art objects can be easily accessible for enjoyment and education. To redress this shortcoming the trustees of the Museum have published this monograph with one hundred and thirty one of its select objects most of them unpublished. They comprise miniature paintings drawings bronzes metalware terracottas wood carvings textiles glass ivory and jade objects produced between the first century BC and 1900 A.D. Hopefully this publication will enable scholars and art connoisseurs to experience some fragrance of the collection. 256 pp.

Hardcover. Condition: New. This exceptionally informative and beautifully illustrated catalogue examines the museum's holdings of paintings done in India under the British during the late 18th and 19th centuries in a style popularly known as Company painting. The high-ranking British officials who had originally commissioned the best examples of these paintings in India routinely took them back to England upon their retirement from service in India. Despite that obstacle and the reticence of most Indian collectors of miniature paintings to embrace this unique cultural hybrid of India and Europe, Jagdish and Kamla Mittal were attracted by the new vision and innovative subjects inherent in this style of painting of India and Europe, and pursued every opportunity to acquire select examples in India that met their high standards of quality. Over decades of collecting, they amassed thirty compelling paintings in this style, all published here for the first time. J. P. Losty, the foremost authority on Anglo-Indian painting, incorporates his latest research into the text, and fleshes out the context and importance of the museum's collection of paintings in this style by including another thirty comparative works from other museums and private collections. This catalogue is an indispensable contribution to the study of Indian painting.

Hardcover. Condition: New. First. 345pp. With color illustrations. his beautifully written and profusely illustrated catalogue of Pahari paintings in the Jagdish and Kamla Mittal Museum of Indian art in Hyderabad is a major contribution to the study of miniature painting in the Punjab Hills. It Presents in detail many exquisite but hitherto unknown examples of the key centres of painting from the mid 17th to the mid 19th century, and provides sensitive analyses of a number of works of crucial art historical importance. Incorporating the latest research into their discussions of the themes and formal aspects of the 128 works reproduced here, the authors pay special attention to the movement of artists from one state to another within the Pahari region, and formulate ground-breaking accounts of the early phases of painting at courts such as Chamba, Mandi, and Kullu. Particularly noteworthy are their strikingly original insights into the family workshop of Pandit Seu and his highly talented sons, Manaku and Nainsukh, whose paintings and legacy into the next two generations are exceptionally well represented in the collection. They devote unprecedented attention processes, and frequently arrive at fresh and convincing distinction among the paintings produced by various members of a given family workshop. The superb quality of the illustrations, the selection of choice details, and the inclusion of revealing comparative material make this book essential to anyone who studies or enjoys Pahari painting.
