Hardcover. Condition: VG. Photos , Maps (illustrator). 1st. The forward to this New Zealand war history from WWII explains that it is not the official account of NZ's medical services in that conflict. However, the book did "give an authentic account of the medical units, a description of the countries in which they served, and conveys something of the nature and importanceof their duties." The units operated in Greece and Crete, Egypt, Palestine, Syria and the campaigns of North Africa before deploying to Italy' ending the war there in the north east at Trieste. While the field medical units worked mainly in tents, except in Italy where they moved indoors to escape the "winter rain, snow and mud." Field units provided ambulances, surgical treatment, transfusions, the casualty clearing stations and and a hygeine company. Hospitals and convalescent depot did not move as often and were linked to NZ by hospital ships .All asoects of the medical unit duties are detailed in McKinney's book, coverage being in chronological order beginning with the formation of the units in NZ in September 1939, ending with the return to NZ of medical personnel from Italy from September 1945. In six years of service the men and women of the medical units could return home proud of the care thay had provided to the wounded, the sick and the injured. First published in 1952. by the War History Branch.
