First edition, first printing, presentation copy, inscribed by the authors to Ira Gershwin on the front free endpaper: "For Ira - So much of this is you and George. We send it with admiration and gratitude. Al and Dick. 11-10-61". This is a wonderful association copy from the library of Ira Gershwin (1896-1983), the Broadway lyricist, brother and collaborator of George Gershwin. The authors were Richard Lewine (1910-2005), the Broadway songwriter, composer and a managing director of the Rodgers and Hammerstein Organization; together with Alfred Simon (1907-1991), the composer who also worked on the George and Ira Gershwin Song Book, published in 1960. As noted on the dust jacket blurb, "Here, at last, is a complete guide book to that most distinctive of American art forms: musical comedy. For all devotees of theatre music, for all those who sing, play, record, or just plain listen to show tunes, this encyclopedia will prove of great and lasting value". Quarto. Original black cloth, spine lettered in pink, silver and blue, front cover lettered in silver with design in blind. With dust jacket. Extremities slightly bumped; jacket worn with creases, tears and some minor loss: a near-fine copy in very good jacket.
