First Edition
Hardcover. Condition: Very Good. 1st Edition. FIRST BOOKFORM EDITION. 8 vo. Half linen with blue-gray boards and paper label on spine, antique style. (2), 106 pp. Two lithographed charts, one folding + woodcuts in the text. Rubberstamp on title of the 'International Electrical Exhibition 1884' at the Franklin Institute and their Memorial Library bookplate on the front pastedown. A very good copy. Originally published in Kühne's 'Untersuchungen aus dem physiologischen Institute der Universität Heidelberg', the identical title is noted in the D.S.B., but as a nine-page paper published with Steiner in 1886. Kühne (1837-1900) succeeded Helmholtz in the chair of physiology at Heidelberg in 1871, and by his retirement in 1899, had produced a varied and significant body of research. The present extensive electrophysiological study of the retina followed on his important studies of visual purple and of migrating pigments in the living retina. "His assumption that a photochemical process occurs prior to the excitation of the retina led him to investigate the electric processes in the eye." (D.S.B.). Waller 5440.
