He was born in the Netherlands in 1744 to Robert Stedman, a Scot and an officer in Holland's Scots Brigade, and his wife of Dutch noble lineage, Antoinetta Christina van Ceulen. He lived most of his childhood in Holland with his parents but spent time with his uncle in Scotland. His years in Surinam, on the northern coast of South America, were characterized by encounters with African slaves and colonial planters, as well as the exotic local flora and fauna. He recorded his experiences in this Narrative of a Five Years Expedition against the Revolted Negroes of Surinam (1796) which, with its firsthand depictions of slavery and other aspects of colonization, became an important tool in the early abolitionist cause. **PRICE JUST REDUCED! Hardcover. sm.4to. 26.5cm, in two volumes, xviii,220,[223],480pp. Limited to 1950 sets, bound in blue cloth backed marbled paper over boards, with printed paper labels on spine, a fine as new set in fine slipcase (tgc) An excellent facsimile reprint of the first edition published in 1796. The book is an engrossing account of the slave rebellion in Dutch Guiana, 1772-1777, illustrated with eight engravings after drawings by the author and by William Blake (13 with an additional 3 attributed to him), Bartolozzi, Benedetti, Barlow, and others. Sabin 91075 called this one of the richest contemporary accounts of a plantation society in the Americas. DNB, says Stedman's narrative is one of the most vivid indictments of slavery that have been penned. He also depicts the social and natural history of the area in detail, and many of the engravings illustrated his descriptions on these subjects. Blake's work, among the finest that he did for hire, are primarily powerful portraits of slaves.
