"In this work some 650 species are described and 1,500 subspecies are indicated, with 35 plates figuring 347 birds in colour.". "The illustrations.are brilliant in color and accurate in this way; printed from wood blocks, the plates have an interesting soft quality. The positions of the birds are often awkward, as if done from study skins" (Ripley).
