Hardcover. Condition: Very Good. No Jacket. Peter Hurd (illustrator). From glistening ice roads to frozen canals, in a wonderland where even the richest nobles thrill to the gliding joys of winter, everyone is awaiting the fabulous race to win the magnificent Silver Skates -- Except Hans Brinker and his sister Gretel. And while Hans and Gretel are strong, fast, disciplined, and loyal.on hand-crafted wooden skates, they can't complete against trained rich kids with fine steel blades. Trade paperback. Condition: As New. Peter Hurd (illustrator). Gift quality About the book: "Sky, says Ross Calvin, determines everything in the Southwest: weather, landscape, plant and animal forms, human types, even art and architecture, religious rites and manner of dress. Altogether this is an authentic book, valuable as an introduction to a region of strange beauty and as an exposition of some little understood aspects of our history." -- thus New York Herald-Tribune appraised the first edition of 'Sky Determines,' which has become a regional classic. In this revised edition, the author has renewed the book with fifty pages of fresh materials, drawn from decades of observing the Southwest. In a long passage on desalinization contributed to the book, Senator Clinton P. Anderson writes: "My mind has been constantly attracted to the suggestion of Ross Calvin that in our Southwest 'Sky Determines.' Sky decides what areas can be habitable, what agricultural lands can be grazed. But is there a new force ahead of us? Will there be a day when sky no longer completely determines and rain clouds will not be so totally important to us? Will the desalinization of the brackish water in our State and the conversion of saline water in coastal areas change the water supply picture? I think.

Mary Elizabeth Mapes Dodge (January 26, 1831 August 21, 1905) was an American children's author and editor, best known for her novel Hans Brinker. She was the recognized leader in juvenile literature for almost a third of the nineteenth century.Dodge was associated with St. Nicholas Magazine for more than thirty years, and it became one of the most successful magazines for children during the second half of the nineteenth century, with a circulation of almost 70,000 copies. She had the faculty of suggesting, creating, obtaining the contributions she wanted from just the people she wanted to write. She was able to persuade many of the great writers of the world to contribute to her children's magazine Mark Twain, Louisa May Alcott, Robert Louis Stevenson, Tennyson, Longfellow, Bryant, Holmes, Bret Harte, John Hay, Charles Dudley Warner, Elizabeth Stuart Phelps, and scores of others. One day, Kipling told her a story of the Indian jungle; Dodge asked him to write it down for St. Nicholas. He never had written for children, but he would try. The result was The Jungle Book. In exceptionally good condition.
