Hard Cover. Circa 1880. Fancy Victorian style binding in original brown blindstamped cloth decorated in gilt on bevelled edge boards. The front cover has a central inset relief in red and gilt depicting a winged angel with lyre. With engravings on steel and illustrated borders. All edges gilt. Light rubbing to corners, front hinge neatly re-glued, contemporary inscription dated 1881 with name on flyleaf. An interesting example of Victorian bookbinding.

Binding is tight and square, hinges are sound - no cracking. Pages and edges are clean with gilt top page edges. Clean pale yellow endpapers, with small bookseller's ticket (Cheeseman Brothers booksellers, Medina, New York) on front fixed endpaper corner. "Christmas, 1878" neatly penned at top edge of front free endpaper. No date of publication, circa 1878. Illustrated with six steel engravings. All pages have red decorative line border. 584 pages.

With a portrait frontispiece and seven engraved plates. Collated complete. A collection of poems by Felicia Dorothea Hemans, alongside explanatory notes and a memoir. Hemans was a renowned English poet whose work was widely popular, especially amongst female readers. She is best known for her poem, 'Casabianca', which has acquired classic status.
Cloth. Condition: Very Good Indeed. Not Stated (illustrator). A splendid edition of Mrs. Hemans' poetical works, stunningly bound by the published, Gall & Inglis. Felicia Hemans (1793-1835) was an English poet, writing during the late Romantic period. Her first poetry was published in 1808 when she was only fourteen, and attracted the attention of renowned Romantic poet, Percy Bysshe Shelley. Marriage and motherhood did not slow down her literary career, and she published several volumes while raising five sons. She released many commercially successful and highly considered volumes, with the likes of Wordsworth holding her in high regard; her work was particularly popular and inspirational for women. Her most famous poem is 'Casabianca', published in 1826 and depicting the captain of a ship during the Battle of the Nile.With a lovely decorated inlay on the front cover depicting an angel with a lyre.Illustrated with colourful decorative borders around the poetry, a frontispiece illustration and four plates. In the publisher's original full cloth binding. Externally very smart, with just a little bumping to the head and tail of the spine, which is slightly cocked. Ownership inscription to the verso of the front endpaper. Internally generally firmly bound, with the front hinge a little exposed but firm. Pages are bright and clean. Very Good Indeed. book.
