This early addition to the New Scientist's Natural History series concentrates of the extensive range of plankton forms to be found in the waters surrounding the British Isles, but extending to including species such as jelly-fish, some crustaceans, strange species from the deep oceans, squids and cuttlefish. While a scholarly study, by a professot of zoology at Oxford, there is much of interest for the lay reader. 335 pages including bibliography, glossary and index, each of the 24 colour plates carry the author's finely detailed multiple drawings of the different species, 24 b/w photos, intext drawings, diagrams, maps throughout. Green hard covers with gilt spine titles VG with bumped corners, slight buckle top front edge, small bump centre front hinge, ink name/stamp front pastedown, light foxing to e/papers, text block otherwise excellent.
