First Edition
Hardcover. Condition: Good. No Jacket. 1st Edition. Roman Theater-Temples by John Arthur Hanson, A Princeton Monograph in Art and Archaeology(XXXIII), was published by Princeton University Press, Princeton, New Jersey, in 1959. This 54-year-old, 130-page, 8 3/4" X 11 3/4", believed-to-be First Edition offering is an ex-library copy in G+ condition. I could have rated this offering VG, at the very least, if not for the presence of a smallish number of library markings, the most glaring being some sporadic roughness observed on parts of the back paste down page, the result, no doubt, of the earlier removal of this volume's circulation card pocket/holder. Save for some barely noticeable shelf wear at the top and bottom edges of book's spine, this offering is in otherwise quite firm/sound overall physical shape at 54. From Introduction, "Modern scholarship has generally characterized the Roman theater of the late Republic and Empire as thoroughly secular. The question of religion has necessarily entered into all discussions of the introduction of theatrical performances into Rome and the significance of Roman ludi, including ludi scaenici. But the possibility is scarcely mentioned that any trace of this religious connection may have survived into the period when stone theaters were being constructed throughout the Roman world. Many writers have maintained that theaters and shrines were completely separated during the Empire, and only occasionally have scholars contradicted this generalization." This intensely researched study/treatise allows Mr. Hanson to weigh in on his chosen topic, and, truth be told, the footnotes rain down upon the reader from his Introduction right through to, and including, the Appendix("Other Architectural Bonds between Theater and Temple"). Presented in five chapters, entitled, respectively, "The Sites of Early Dramatic Performances", "The Architectural Pattern", "The Theater of Pompey", "Imperial Theater Buildings Combined with Temples", and "Pompa, Sellisternium, and Altar", there are, at book's end, some 55 Illustrations, including 6 black and white photographs and 49 black and white reproductions of the original sketches, but, much more frequently, beautifully-rendered, original line drawings of such artists as Lugli, Fasolo, Canina, Formige, Chabret, Pannini, Wuilleumier, and Dyggve. Also included are Contents Page, (List of) Abbreviations, the previously-mentioned Appendix, an extensive Bibliography (some 4 1/2, over-sized pages worth), and Index. This unique offering, perhaps, calls out to the more discriminating readers among us, unless I miss my guess! Thanks very much!!.
