Fine condition black cloth boards/black spine with a silver front cover decoration and silver spine lettering, contained in a very good condition non price-clipped color photographic dust jacket. Includes Foreword; Appendix; Bibliography; and Index. Illustrated with more than 160 black-and-white photographs and over 100 color photographs. The upper left jacket front contains a one inch closed tear; the upper rear jacket has a 3/4 inch closed tear and just over 4 inch crease, and the lower rear jacket has a 1/2 inch closed tear (see photographs). Signed and inscribed by the author, Wallace B. Gusler, with thick blue Sharpie/marker at the top of the first free front blank endpaper. (see photograph) "Outstanding examples of decorated firearms from the collection of Clay P. Bedford are examined in ninety-four detailed entries. Mainly European in origin, the arms were carefully chosen to illustrate the decorative evolution of Western firearms over more than three centuries, and to show how they rightfully take their place within the larger framework of the Western decorative arts. Many of the arms discussed are of royal or noble provenance. Two guns from the collection of Louis XIII of France are noteworthy both for the excellence of their execution and for their great historical importance. Also illustrated are pieces that belonged to the King of Denmark, the Medici, and the Dukes of Hesse-Darmstadt, along with others from the Royal Armories of Naples, Tula, the Kremlin, and Versailles. From the latter comes the magnificent cased pair of pistols given in 1825 by the Marquis de Lafayette to the South American liberator, Simon Bolivar. Each of the entires includes a detailed description of the piece, a discussion of the maker, when known, and an analysis of the arm that considers the influences involved in its decoration, design, and construction. Over 100 full color and more than 160 black and white photographs are included. The appendix discussion of stock woods is the first in any book on firearms." - from the inner front jacket flap About the Author: Wallace B. Gusler: Curator of furniture at Colonial Williamsburg, joined the staff in 1962 as master gunsmith. He has published articles on Virginia furniture, and is presently working on books on Virginia long rifles of the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries, and on eastern Virginia furniture. - from the inner rear jacket flap.
