Speiser; Fotos von den behandelten Kunstwerken auf Kunstdruckpapier, teils in Farbe, teil schwarzweiss; - Dieses Buch widmet sich den in Japan «Frühlingsbildern», SHUNGA, genannten Darstellungen der Liebe und des Sexus, die eine Provinz im Reiche der japanischen Kunst ausmachen. Es ist dabei keineswegs unsere Absicht, irgend etwas Herabsetzendes über dieses Land zu äußern, das nur Respekt verdient. Die Freuden des Fleisches sind der ganzen Welt gemeinsam, und die Künstler haben sie in verhüllter oder in freier, offener Weise überall gepriesen. Eine Ausstellung von Malern unserer Zeit im Museum Galliera von Paris, im Jahre 1963, hatte sich zum Thema das «Paar» gewählt und widmete sich ausdrücklich den Manifestationen einer mit allen Freiheiten dargestellten Liebe. In der Ausstellung wirkte besonders erstaunlich der japanische Einfluß bei zwei Bildern, das erste, von Pierre Ambrogiani, zeigte eine Frau im Kampf mit rundköpfigen, schnabelbewehrten Ungeheuern, die sie mit Froschhänden bedrängten ; das zweite, von Yves Brayer, stellte eine Vereinigung auf einem galoppierenden Pferde dar, jenes Motiv, das uns in Japan wie im China der Mongolenzeit begegnet. Nach «EROS KALOS», «ROMA AMOR» und «KAMA KALA» wollen wir uns auch hier mit dem Gegenstand ohne Verfälschung und Entstellung bekannt machen, wobei wir uns auf Vorstellungen beschränken, die sich seit der gesellschaftlichen Revolution im Japan des 17. Jahrhunderts vollzogen haben. Unser Dank gebührt allen Kennern und Gelehrten, die uns großzügig geholfen und mit ihrem Rat unterstützt haben : Mr. Perry T Rathbone, Direktor des Museums in Boston ; Mr. Robert T Paine, Mr. Hsien-Chi Tseng und Mr. Alan Priest, Konservatoren am gleichen Museum ; Mr. John A.
